After I download and install HuffYUV, I bit test capture with this codec. Yes! This is the best solution for me I ever seen. It is loseless, and compress ratio is between 2,3:1 to 2,6:1. Then YUY2+HuffYUV+VirtualDub is superb combination.
    Thanks Walrus!

yes Doc, I'm a bit slow. haven't you noticed?
I thought I knew all about this stuff.. well, not completely indepth but to a degree that would allow myself to maneuver. I'm still stuck on one point. You said: "by redirecting the YUY2 signal to the new compressor (HuffYUV etc.) instead of using the built-in one. This compressor is best chosen in the capture programs setups AFTER choosing YUY2 capture mode."
How do you choose YUY2 capture mode? I have my MS VidCap, from the list of codecs I would have for example: matrox mjpeg, dc30 mjpeg, huffYUV. THen I choose huffYUV. how would I choose YUY2 capture mode? by selecting the codec do I select that specific capture mode??

      see yas.
      thanks

oh wait a sec. I just downloaded VirtualDub and found the setting for: Custom Video Format in which I can choose YUY2
Do I still need the YUY2 Marvel crack??

          P.S. (hehe)
should I be choosing (from the Custom Video Format list) YUV2, YUYV, or UYVY? what's the difference?

Well..one step I left out applies to the Marvel & RR-G. That is going to the Download page here and getting Flying Dutchman's YUY2 utility.

Running this program will make the YUY2 option appear in the capture programs Format options. You select YUY2 from the list and then select a frame size from the Set Video Size dialog. You then select the alternate compressor from the Compression dialog.

              Great, thanks!
              Is there any specific framesize I should use.. 640, 704, 720 x480?

Instead of using YUV2, will changing the MJPG Quality setting in the registry make a big difference?

Changing the MJPeg quality in the registry or anywhere else will not get you that much of an increase.

What rez to use for YUY2 captures depends on what kind of video you are doing. If the scenes are "natural" video, that is without effects, then 352x480 is enough.

IF you're going to add effects, titles or the like then capturing full frame 704x480 should be used IF your drive subsystem is capable of the 20+ mB/sec it requires.

yeah, but Doc answers the questions nicely, with patience and a genuine wanting to help.

and can I tell that I have learned so much because of him and all the others that have continued to post here. My eternal gratitude to you all. That's the way it's supposed to be, people helping each other out (not that I know enough to offer help...) not your scornful dismissal of questions, Patrick.

                      Have I missed something here?

                      ?????????????????????????????

Well kid, I can see there's a valid reason for the username that you've selected. With a chip that size on your shoulder, you'll be experiencing all kinds of misery.

My apologies Patrick. I confused you with Brian (the terrible). All this discussion has been quite an eye opener for me and this has only been done through my constant questioning. I hunger for this type of knowledge and I appreciate very much that you are willing to read and respond to my often stupid questions. In addition, your particular advice was very helpful, but I still needed to know about other ways to get around my problem. If I would have taken your complete advice, I would have not been told about YUV2, huffYUV, Raid controllers, etc. I need to be asking these stupid questions because I really don't know that much.. not as much as you guys (and girls.. though very few. why is that? that saddens me) at least.
Again, I thank you all for everything.
                        Thank you and goodnight.

I don't know how you could confuse me with Brian, I'm much better looking...

Seriously though, there was nothing in my first post which indicated that you should not be made aware of any and all options by anyone who cared to pass them on to you. Furthermore, I stand by my earlier comments that you will end up with inferior edited video image quality if you are supplying an inferior video signal to begin with.

One last bit of advice - As someone one has been hanging around this site for almost two years now, I suggest you get to know the "personalities" before you start passing judgement on anyone. You won't make too many friends here by sounding off on your 7th day as a forum member. Having said that, I accept your apologies.

                            Patrick

... better looking ... and conceited with it! Remember, looks never replace brains

Seriously, my systolic and diastolic pressures both went up 20 mm when I read your previous posts which I thought were a bit hard on a young kid thirsting for knowledge. Sure, I agree with you much can be found by scanning through the last 4152 threads but, quand même... (especially as you both seem to come from that mysterious wilderness north of the 49th parallel).

Heh, heh... hey, all of us on the 'net are good looking, Brian.

Now I don't know if I'm simply up too late or you're up too early, but your post makes no sense to me. You're suggesting I was too hard on this young fella? Have you read your own post from earlier in this thread? It was that post that I was mistakenly accused of writing. You yourself even stated when you wrote it- "Sorry if this seems harsh..." And I'm not sure what the heck you're referring to with this comment- "I agree with you much can be found by scanning through the last 4152 threads..." Where did I make any kind of mention of that? I dunno, I must be overtired and I'm imagining all this. I'm signing off and going to bed before this gets any weirder.

The IBM 75GXP 75GB drive is rated at
                                37MB/sec sustained transfers. That
should be sufficient for raw RGB
                                captures.
