    Jerry,

    No, but seriously, Jerry, I do get a kick out of you, man! You are definitely DA MAN, when it comes to MSP, and I, for one, hold you in high regard.

    Yeah, I really didn't put much thought into the title for this thread, so it probably looked a bit misleading. My main interest in posting it, though, was that maybe someone might know how the heck anyone might get DV timeline playback out the IEEE-1394 port to be video only, and have the audio come out on the sound card output... because (I know I risk things here!) the Power Patch does exaclty that on my machine. That's the part that's got me scratching my head in bewilderment. If anyone might have any idea where I can get into "el-tweak-eroo" mode to actually cause this strange effect, then it could be troubleshot on my computer. I just don't know where to start. I did compare ULEAD32.INI before and after patching, and the only items that change with the Power Patch are:

    this section is added:

    [VIODRIVER]
    mpegdll1=mpeg2.dll
    DCPrecision=0
    LigosDecoder=1
    LigosPlay=1
    LigosAudioDecoder=1
    LigosAudioPlay=1
    MotionEstimate=20

    these lines in the Playback section are deleted:

    [Playback]
    MPEGCLSID11={CF957F20-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID12={CF957F40-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID13={CF957F20-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID14={CF957F30-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID21={CF957F20-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID22={CF957F40-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID23={CF957F20-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}
    MPEGCLSID24={CF957F30-77FE-4192-A59F-95CA43BD04BA}

    Otherwise, the two ULEAD32.INI files are the same.

    I uninstalled MSP6.5 yet again, then reinstalled, and got my *flawless* timeline playback again. Adding the Patch put me back into the problem.

    Pretty weird, eh?

      You have a system-specific problem, for certain.

      I've been testing this patch now for two solid days.

      ...and it's working correctly.

      Here's a simple test:

      1. Insert DV .avi into Va

      2. Make certain Quick & Instant Play are *not* selected in the preview menu

      3. Click on PREVIEW WINDOW's preview button

      4. If the clip's attributes match the project settings, a horizontal red line and a horizontal green line should be visible immediately above the clip at the top of the timeline.

      5. Video should output via Firewire to the camcorder and if the camcorder's analog out is attached to an external television, the clip should play back in real time on the external TV monitor

      6. In the Preview Window, there will be a text message stating "video frames are outputting to DV camcorder."

      If one wishes to hear the audio - not on the TV set but through the computer speakers - then one can press the ALT key and use the mouse to SCRUB along the timeline. *Or* you can select Instant Play in the preview menu and the sound will be heard through the computer speakers and the picture will play in the Preview Window only.

      In those ways, the audio can be heard - as an alternative - through the computer speakers, but the video will no longer output to the DV camcorder. It will appear - instead - in the Preview Window.

      If one scrubs *without* pressing the ALT key, then video will output - silently - to the external television via firewire.

      If you're not pressing the ALT key and your sound is currently playing via your computer speakers, then something is definitely getting mucked-up on your specific computer system.

      Any number of possible conflicts could cause something like that to occur.

      But - thankfully - that's not the way the patch is behaving on my two systems.

          Well, while nosing around, I found a help file in the Program Files - MediaStudioPro65 directory, "readme.hlp". In that, there's an item called "Digital Video (DV) support"

          In there, it has this bulleted item:

          "If you are using an OHCI IEEE-1394 card, you must use Windows 98 Second Edition (or later version) or Windows 2000."

          No mention of WinME...

          Then I remembered something from the Ulead web page about the patch, saying that it added support for DV on the XP operating system.

          Nowhere, however, can I find anything saying that any of this will work on WinME.

          So, it's possible that the added support for DV in the XP operating system may have negated or blown away the workability in WinME.

          So, I wonder if anyone else is using (GAG!) WinME with an OHCI IEEE-1394 card AND has upgraded with this Power Patch?

            One thing that I did forget to mention was that when the install asks for DV drivers to be installed, I skip it. I don't have a DV cam so I don't have one to connect.

            I can't even verify whether or not the questino at hand works with my system, I just thoguht it odd that the lines were deleted from your ini file and not mine. Could be a coincidence or could be something to look into.

              Hi Jeff,

              Same thing happening here!

              Using Win2000...

              I'll do some more investigating and, if I discover anything will pass it on.

              ------- later that same evening

              Did a 'repair' and it went back to 6.5 - everything fine.

              Put the Power Patch back and DV video pops out to camcorder after a few seconds wait, but audio is through computer speakers.

              This few seconds wait before the picture appears on the camera monitor doesn't seem right!?

              What camera do you have - mines a Sony D8.

              Regards,

              Nick.

                Interesting, I have a different error. MSP 6.5 fails to load completely. I get an error in veditor.exe. If I repair (remove the update patch) everything goes back to normal. I was able to repeat the error several times. I notice that veditor.exe is updated on the patch.

                Also, it runs just fine on my older P3-1000 computer with Win98SE.

                  Hi Nick,

                  I'm using a Sony TRV-9000, and also (as an alternate 1394 output) I have a Sony DVMC-DA2 converter. Both devices get the same result. And, yes, it does seem to be a much longer lag before the preview starts in 6.51a.

                  Well, that's certainly disheartening to read you're using W2K and getting the exact same problem I'm getting on WinME (Jerry, are you making note of this?). I was at the point where I figured the problem was probbly unique to my computer, the OS, and probably a result of my having been a lazy "software slob" over the past two years. Now that there's a second instance of this same problem on another computer using a different OS, I'm more prone to thinking that this may be some flukey "traffic jam" between drivers and contentious hardware, or something of that nature.

                  Right now, I've got MSP6.5 reinstalled without the patch, so that I can get some stuff done. I plan to send off a detailed description of the problem to Ulead by monday morning. If you would also do that, Nick, perhaps they'll take more notice. I've found that tech support at Ulead may seem slow and not responsive to some people, but my experiences over the years have been that they do a thorough job.

                  Note: in a previous post I listed ULEAD32.INI additions and deletions in reverse. What I posted as deleted was actually what was added, and vice-versa. Chalk it up to "old-timer's disease" (not to be confused with alzhiemer's, which is quite horrible).

                    People not having problems with 6.51a patch:

                    1. Lawrence
                    2. Doc
                    3. Jerry (on both Pentium & Athlon Windows 2000 systems)

                    People having problems:

                    1. Jeff
                    2. Nick

                    Here's what I suggest:

                    Do a complete reformat and reinstallation of Windows.

                    I know nobody likes to hear that advice.

                    But it's the only way to narrow down what other software you might have or even which hardware you might have that is conflicting with the update.

                    It's really not difficult to narrow it down in this manner.

                    I've solved such problems in the past in this manner.

                      Sciascia,

                      I agree with you all the way. This forum is where computer related problems are solved by the fraternity of all the helpfull entusiasts.

                      The patch is there for free. Lump it or dump it.

                      By the way Sciascia, the audio problem in my other thread has been caused by a file (audio filter) Ligos MPEG Audio Decoder from MediaStudio 6.5. It appears that this filter and DX 8.1 are
                      incompatible, at least on my system. But that's not the end of the world !!

                        Well, I can see that Ted's problem with the patch on his W2K system isn't the same as Nick's and mine, it's worse...

                        Jerry: yes, it's probably true that if I do a fresh install, I'll stand a 50/50 chance of making this problem go away. Unfortunately, the reason I posted my other thread on wheher to upgrade to XP or W2K was because I lost my WinME install disk. It was probably among the things that were stolen from my house when it was broken into a year ago, but I didn't discover it missing until this past month when I decided to do a fresh re-install of the whole system. Since I got laid off at the beginning of May, I'm counting my change before I buy a new OS.

                        Also, since I have the time, it might be nice to nail down the real conflict on my system, because that kind of information is always helpful to Ulead in making their product as robust as it can possibly be. If they know exactly what caused this on my system, then when (not if) someone calls tech support to solve that same problem, they'll be able to say something besides "do a complete re-install of your OS" while not knowing if it will actually solve the problem.

                        One thing's for sure: I'll never be dissuaded from using Ulead software, especially MSPro, but right now I WILL be putting off my purchase of W2K for a few more weeks because of this development with the 6.51a patch.

                          Sorry you were burglarized.

                          That happened to me in 1988.

                          A thief broke into a locker I had rented on a short term basis and he (or she) stole everything I owned at the time, including all of my family heirlooms that had been given to me by my mother.

                          The police never caught the culprit.

                          Good luck,

                            ---------------------
                            Video Capture module will import DV but will not export.
                            Video Editor module will export DV but will not export
                            from a set position on the clip, the whole clip will be exported.
                            The Camera brand name has been identified but not the model.
                            Camera manipulation via software OK.

                            Analog: No Problems Import/Export

                            Initialy the software would not recognize DV format but upon resetting
                            this has been cleared.

                                Do a complete reformat and reinstallation of Windows.

                                I know nobody likes to hear that advice.
                                Advice? I thought that was written into all the Windows manuals as procedure for maintaining proper system operation. Look for yourself, it on the page following the last one in the book. Oh wait, er, that's my writing.
                                Perspective cannot be taught. It must be learned.
