The new pickup is called the "Dual-Focus Hologram Pickup" and Panasonic is responsible. It works by adding a holographic optical element to the object lens.
Laser light going through the hologram is focussed to form the CD/Video CD spot, while light passing through the periphery is focussed into a spot for reading the DVD pits.
It and supporting chipsets should be coming to market soon, if they haven't already.
