Yup. That's the difference between CD-R and CD-RW.

The new pickup is called the "Dual-Focus Hologram Pickup" and Panasonic is responsible. It works by adding a holographic optical element to the object lens.

Laser light going through the hologram is focussed to form the CD/Video CD spot, while light passing through the periphery is focussed into a spot for reading the DVD pits.

It and supporting chipsets should be coming to market soon, if they haven't already.

The one I'm thinking of wasn't Panasonic. One of the chipset makers launched a chipset supporting -RW, +RW, -RAM and CD on a day close to that time. My mind suggests it might have been Atmel, but I could be wrong about that.

Edit: I was right, it was Atmel

        On a related note:
What do you use to store your D8/MiniDV tapes? Is there a vendor that has some kind of (affordable) storage box or rack?
