I am trying to transfer old video recordings to DVD and much to my shock discovered one of the shows was on betamax. So I dug out my old betamax vcr to copy the tape. But: although betamax users a faster helical scan than VHS (hence the improved picture quality) it uses a slower tape speed. The upshot of this is (and always was) poorer linear audio. It was a nigtmare getting decent sound off the tape! In an ironic twist, old VHS recording with analogue sound play fine. Unfortunately, many of my old HiFi VHS recordings will not track the HiFi sound and I have had to revert to the linear soundtrack!
