  • MY first project!

    Hiya guys!

In the five years or so that I have been at MURC, I think this is my second post in this forum

As some of you may know, I got married two weeks ago. Today the wedding video arrived. And it’s pretty poor. The guy performed all the editing on the camera, and only used a PC to create a rather cheezy looking splash screen.

For example, the video is essentially a selection of short clips spliced together. Now the video itself isn't that bad, however the audio also jumps ever 10seconds or so when the camera changes 'angle'. It is especially noticeable when there is music in the background. After 10mins or so it gets really annoying.

I don't want to offend my wife’s parents as they footed the bill for this, so I am trying to tread carefully. I would, however, like to make it less tacky and more... personal.

I intend to include a slideshow of the photographs, entries from the guest book and cards and some memorabilia from the honeymoon. I might even be tempted to record a second audio track where I can offer a commentary. Nothing that I haven’t already seen done.

I have never undertaken a project like this before The video is on DVD so getting the audio/video tracks aren't going to be a problem. But as for the rest, I am not really sure how to proceed. I don't really know what to expect. I know that DVD authoring can be a right PITA.

    I am open to suggestions!

What software would you guys suggest for the various stages in creating this project?

Are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of?

I am not after a 'how-to', simply a list of what works and what doesn't

(this seems like an ideal opportunity to go out an buy a DVD writer )

Thinking about it, the completed project will consist of the following:

Animated introduction followed by a menu with the following options:
The wedding video with potentially a choice of audio streams
A slideshow of the wedding photographs
    Comments from the guestbook
    Photographs from the honeymoon

I will probably leave the actual editing of the video until everything else is completed. (in the new year)

I have checked out DVD Lab after reading about here... It seems a tad basic, although I am sure it will do the job.

Of course, if money is no object (the NHS pays well, I know!!!) I'd tend to use MSP7. Be warned, any editing of the VOB/MPEG files, other than cuts, would cause deterioration of quality. For the non-video stuff, I would do all the work in DV1 AVI, assuming the existing video is in 720 x 576 (check before starting) and, when you are satisfied with it, then convert it to DVD-compliant MPEG-2. This will give you better quality. Your animated introduction can be done with the MSP7 goodies, as can the DVD authoring menus.

May all your video and other troubles be little ones!

704x480 NTSC/576 PAL is also DVD compliant. So is 352x480/576. This means you can use the footage from cards like the Marvel, eTV etc. that use these sizes without having to scale them during the encode.

To prevent recompression use the matching frame size in the project settings and, in Uleads DVD Workshop or DVD Moviefactory 2, check the "don't convert compliant files" box on the Finish page.

If you're using the DVD MovieFactory 2 build that comes with MSPro7 set AC3 as the audio type at about 192 kbps and the source audio will be convered quite fast This generally gives better deck compatability.

Whoa, Doc, Paddy is in PALland, so he should keep away from AC3: many DVD players here don't accept it.

MPEG it is for PAL as a general rule, though I think more PAL decks are AC3 compatable than you may think.

                  ?????

99% of all pre-recorded DVDs sold in shops here are AC3 only.

                  Don't worry about using AC3!

Uleads MediaStudio Pro 7.0; a video editing suite of programs that is very powerful and includes AC3 as an audio encoding option. It also includes a version of DVD MovieFactory 2 that can do AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio.

(DVD Workshop 2 does not exist yet: Doc and I are still furiously beta-testing it, so his error is probably almost Freudian)

                        Typo duely noted and corrected

As Brian noted DVD Workshop 2 is still in beta, but the error was fatique induced and not a Freudian slip. Sorry...

That said Workshop 2 is just too damned cool

I can assure you though, Paddy - after watching the wedding Video 20 times you wont ever want to look at it again!

                            Good luck though
