OK... I have MSP7 and Premier Pro.

I need to dump the VOBs so that I can process them.

Any ideas on how to do this with minimal loss of quality?

The first thing to try, presuming they're unprotected, is renaming them with an *.mpg extension.

thanks guys. I have renamed the VOBs but they don't behave very well.... I think i need to rip the DVD to my HD to a single MPG...

Which of the two apps above should I use to edit the video?

I can see how to create the DVD once the editing is complete

Then use MSPro7's video capture tool, but remember that this only works with unprotected DVD's.

First start MSPro7's Video Capture tool and select to use the Ulead DVD-VR capture plugin. Next select Capture/Video from the menu bar.

On the Capture Video/Options tab set your capture path then click the Properties button. Now browse to the DVD's video_ts folder (dvd_rtav for DVD recorder discs) and click OK.

Click OK again on the Options tab and you'll be presented with a scene selection menu. Note the video and audio stream settings in the right panel, you'll need them later. Now shift-click each scene you want to "capture", click Finish and they'll be copied as MPEG's to the capure folder.

These MPEG's can be loaded into MSPro7 for re-editing even if they have AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio. Set the MSPro7 project settings to match those of the MPEG stream properties you wrote down in the scene selection menu of Video Capture. Now they *should* smartrender.

When you go to export the re-edited project I recommend using AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio. If AC3 was the audio type of the "captured" sources match its settings. If the "captured" audio is MPEG or LPCM then I'd still use AC3 (use the 2/0 type) for DVD player compatability but at a bitrate of about 192kbps.

The trialware may or may not have AC3 audio encoding. I haven't used it.
