  • Win NT/Win2K - MSP 6.0

Win2K is actually the better option at this point as release Win2K drivers are on the horizon.

    MSPro6: no problems

Marvel/RR-G: once the full release of the Win2K drivers appear, no problems. Now: a bit unstable. Win2K drivers shouldn't be too far off.

Disks: both allow you to use FAT32 or NTFS volumes. NTFS is the way to go as there is no real limit on file sizes other than those imposed by your software.

I wouldn't say no problems with MSP6 and w2k, but they are minor.

I've been using w2k since two weeks before its "official" release and MSP6 as soon as the upgrade from 5.2 was shipped. I've setup half dozen NLE systems using MSP6 and w2k on various hardware.

I've only three issues with MSP after the DVpatchII is applied, I don't know if they are confined to w2k or are independent of OS.

    1) There is a "race" condition when switching off the camcorder. Let me explain. If a DV camcorder is not connected to the firewire port MSP works fine scrubbing and preview show in the preview window on the computer monitor. If you power on the camcorder preview switches to DVout over firewire -- meaning now the scrub and preview go out the iLink (as Sony calls firewire) interface and the computer monitor preview window remains black. This is a useful feature to get a real look at your transitions etc. Problem is if you turn off the camcorder and are too quick to do a timeline operation MSP6 will lockup losing all work since your last save. You can kill it with taskmanager and restart it without rebooting, but its a major bummer if you didn't save before looking at the firewire preview. The fix is to wait about 30 seconds after switching off the camcorder before touching the mouse.

    2) MSP6 crashes when previewing HuffYUV encoded video. I've repeated this on two very different W2K systems. Scrubbing and editing seem to work, but hitting play on the preview crashes Veditor with an exception. There are also issues with smart render and HuffYUV where you get only colored snow instead of video on the smart rendered (i.e. copied) parts of the video. Forcing recompress seems to fix it. Premiere6 has the same problem on the one system I tested with both MSP and Premiere. So this may be a HuffYUV bug or problem with its default settings. I only discovered this recenty since I do almost 100% DV now. But note that Premiere6 did not crash when previewing HuffYUV captured video (it can't play it back smoothly either but that's a "feature" of HuffYUV).

    3) MSP6 preview and scrub doesn't play out the DVDmax feature on the G450. The MSP6 source window plays out the DVDmax fine in all respects -- scrub, single frame, jog dial, play. I've not been able to find a set of ini file settings to fix this. Perhaps the newest G450 drivers fix it, but neither 5.14 or 5.33 do.

As you can see none of these are "show stoppers" and I have no regret recommending MSP6 and w2k with NTFS filesystems as the way to go initially.

The G200 Marvel is at present basically useless at present with w2k. I'm hoping Doc is correct about good drivers coming "soon".

Never seen 1 or 2. 3 isn't an issue here since I have a multiboot with the RT-2000 in Win2K and use DVDMax/MSP from the Win98SE setup.

        1) is repeatable, but of course its possible its confined to OHCI firewire cards (ADS Pyro, TI chipset MS DV & OHCI drivers) and the Sony camcorders.

        2) is also repeatable on two different systems. I only discovered it when I was curious about the Huffy Mystery thread from a few days ago.

Have you tried MSP6 and HuffYUV when dual booted into w2k?

        3) is a problem (inconvienence) if you are not planning to do dual boot. IMHO dual boot is only viable for computer geeks and not for someone who simply wants to edit. I still have a dual boot for troubleshooting, but I've not tried MSP6 and HuffYUV on win98se yet.

Are you saying that in win98se my G450 with DVDmax enabled MSP6 should show timeline scrubs and preview playback on the TVout? On w2k it doesn't, although clips in the source window do which I find strange.
