Well, now that Nero Digital is becoming an integral part of standalone DVD-players, it looks like it has established itself as a widely recognized standard, providing serious competition for DivX.-Off the beaten path I reign-

Any comparisons to DVDShrink? Better, same, worse?
I have used Shrink for some time and the quality is excellent. IMHO

I don't think you can really compare the two. DVD Shrink does not do anything more than what it says it does: it shrinks the contents to fit a smaller capacity DVD, but still works in mpeg-2.
Nero Digital is a codec. With Nero Recode and the Nero Digital codec you can also resize the contents of a DVD but until now it would leave you with a DVD or CD that could not be played standalone DVD-players. I think it would be better to compare Nero Digital to DivX.-Off the beaten path I reign-

I fully agree with Landrover, regarding codec coparison. Also the advantages of DivX are much more since its encodings can be played on a "stand alone" player which also includes Divx that are now frequently found at very reasonable prices.
I just wouldn't buy a DVD player without DivX. Nero Digital has not reached that level yet. Let's see what will happen in the future.

Nero Digital isn't the standard, MPEG4 is. When you buy a player which can play back MPEG4 ASP and/or AVC, you don't need to use Nero Digital to encode the material for it. You could use any other MPEG4 ASP/AVC codec, like x264 for example.
And you can be quite safe in using MPEG4 ASP/AVC, as sooner or later all players will support it (MPEG4 AVC will be supported by both HD-DVD and Blu Ray). I doubt DivX will survive much longer when MPEG4 AVC is widely used.Comment
