Inserted a short video file and exited by saveing the project file.
Next time when I started the VideoEditor8 the Previous Setting was NTSC.
Now, after installing the SP1 the PAL is the default but the Video data rate is the default 6000 and the Audio bit rate is the default 224 kbps, not my prev. settings of 4000/160. Every time I have to edit the project.
I will point out that an earlyer UDVD Movie Factory did the same. I was not able to set the PAL capture and couldnt keep the capture settings. Therefor I suspect that even the MSP8 has the same, or similar bug. Not the MSP7 has it.
The truth is that I don't use video editing so intesive as I did in the past, and I am not prepared to spend much time just to set up the video editor or try to find eventually bugs in the video editor.
On the other side, I am old enough to know that not all new releses of programs are the best, or better than the previous releses. MSP7 satisfies my needs and I stop trying MSP8.

Well, in order to satisfy myself about Debbie's contention, I loaded a 7+ Gb PAL DV1 file, as captured, onto the timeline, having switched on the video computer and started VE specifically for the test. I left VE to take its own defaults, didn't even look to see what they were. The green and yellow lines appeared, showing that the project settings were PAL DV1, which is the setting I always use.

Out of curiosity, I changed the settings to MPEG PAL and did a mini-project, creating a PAL DVD file and a dvp.

Importing the DVP into New and the project was correct.

Starting New and the projects were back to my DV1 PAL setting (not the MPG)

I never edit in MPEG, so have never considered the problems that may be involved.

Agreed Brian, it's a matter of taste and opinion. I don't mean that v8 is all evil.
As regards the timeline insertion; so far I have noticed it on mpeg-2, 5Gb+ and
divx clips. I still have to see what happens with avi (digital or mjpeg).

      Cheers,

      Debbie

Just tested inserting several MPEG-2 files of up to 4.2 Gb, no problem.

DixX and Xvid (and WMV) files are always hairy because of their high compression. The higher the compression, the hairier they become. They may take some time before they can be put on the timeline because the missing data has to be reconstituted from nothing to have a frame-by-frame visibility. Anything with a bitrate of <1000 kbit/s (arbitrary figure) must be considered as pushing the limits of video editing systems.

Granted, but why will it not happen on v7 ?

To be precise , I do the capturing using InterVideo DVR 3 which will give me a mpeg-2
            movie file.
I would then import the clip via the insert video file icon that would open
my movies folder, from which I select the clip and clicking the open icon.

Noting will happen on the first attempt and on the second the file will be at the
            mouse poiter

Sorry to give the obvious answer, but it is not the same software, so why should it behave the same? V8 is not a minor rehash of v 7, but most of it was developed from scratch.

What are you capturing from? Any reason why you don't use the integrated Capture module in Video Editor? Even more important, why edit in MPEG-2? I presume, as you are in Europe, that you are not using a cam with HD-MPEG features????

I have been using WinDVR for quite some time now and the video clips are no problem
to edit in UPSP including smart rendering. I got to like the little app.

It is very true what you said about DivX. A small experiment revealed that the V. 8
"strugles" a little more than v.7 to load a DivX movie.

What I did is, choose a clip via the insert video icon. Prieview the clip for an instant the click Open.
