  • Which High Definition DVD Format Do You GUESS Will Win?

    1. HD DVD?

    2. Blu-Ray Disc?

    3. Neither?

    I'm only guessing.

But I suspect -- at this early point -- that HD DVD might possibly win out over Blu-Ray Disc.

That's my best guess and I could be wrong for sure.

But I suspect HD DVD's price advantage will control the destiny of this race.

That -- plus -- more Hollywood titles are out on HD DVD than on Blu-Ray Disc.

    What do you think?

My gut says HD DVD because of its head start, cheaper players and that you can use existing red laser fabs to make movie discs. BR may end up being a data format instead of a media distribution format.

What will likely happen is burner/player makers will make them multi-format and let the users decide which to use, just as they did with -R and +R. Wonder if you can put HD DVD on one side of a disc and BR on the other? Hmm....

That too, and several companies are now setting up the infrastructure.

If they don't get into the game Blockbuster is so dead. Several of their stores in our area have aready closed.

          That's what I thought.

But then I read this article:

          Now I'm not so sure.

The two sides may be resigned to fighting it out.

Sure, Blu-ray Disc has the backing of many big players.

          But HD DVD has Microsoft.

          And the price advantage.

And it has serious problems according to reviewers. Instability was the major complaint.

They all complain of "slow startup."

I don't see any complaints about "instability" in connection with the Toshiba HD DVD player.

I did, however, see that complaint in connection with the Blu-ray Disc player in the review at the following link:

"Cons: *Frequent playback hiccups" (Review of Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray Disc player)

I'd also stake my money on HD DVD...more compatible laser-wise. Blu-Ray will remain a "Sony thing".
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

But Samsung is usually crap anyhow.. I'll wait for the Sony player review.

Other reasons I am beginning to suspect "HD DVD" will emerge victorious:

                      1. Marketing: http://tinyurl.com/e86gd

                      2. "HD DVD" is the DVD Forum's approved format: http://tinyurl.com/gnspv

On the other hand, SLATE clearly disagrees:

                      We'll see.

                      Should be interesting.

I was more thinking about the infrastructure/distribution methods that are already there

As Dr. Mordrid says, another option should be stardard dvd, dual layer, MPG-4 and new DVD player with more multimedia and interactive firmware.
Like actual DVD players with DivX or Xvid, but with more options to do best authoring.
9 gigas is quite space for 1280x760 HD if it is well encoded.
A firmware with a little Adobe-Macromedia Flash plugin will be amazing.
