    ops :-)

    Paulr, sorry about that

I meant the HighPoint chipset (like the one on the abit board)

Oh, other examples of crappy hardware include:

    1) S3 trio 3d agp cards (yuk, yuk, yuk, molassas slow)
    2) Fugitsu IDE hard drives
    3) Tomato motherboards (that is a real manuafatuer name)
    4) Low end A-open PCI soundcards (my old ISA ESS 1868 sounds better)
    5) The intel 820
    6) Generic memory (often fails after 1-2 years of use)

      Someone hacked the poll!!?!
And those 177 votes can't be true - considering the number of total thread-views and how many views we had before with just ~20 votes....
But we named the *dog* Indiana...

Haven't seen any problems on my Asus A7V133. I don't have an SBLive, tho.

From my experience with IDE RAID arrays, the Promise solution has offered a faster and more reliable solution than any card running the Highpoint chipset.

As Highpoint & Promise make up the low-end RAID market (No I'm not talking about the IDE RAID 5 cards here) I know which I would choose every time.
          ====

          NO KIDDING!!

I have several Promise RAID's running, some of them for several years, and have yet to lose any data that wasn't caused by a drive failure (mostly Fujitsu). They are also fast as hell.

I may preview for them and some may be suspicious of what I say because of that, but they wouldn't be in my lab if they didn't WORK!!

I had an Abit KA7-100 with an SB Live! I had problems with my DVD player in 4 channel mode on Win2k, but that's all. Never in gaming.

The odd thing is...now that I have a pure Intel solution, 4 channel mode in Win2k is buggy and the sound pops and crackles all the time. Very odd.

Microsoft left the debugging code in the latest dx8. Turning this off removes the crackling and popping. What you need to do is download the directx control applet and turn the bugger off. It worked for me. This doesn't apply for win98 though.
A lot of people think this is a Via bug it isn't. Shock horror I'm sticking up for Via. Oh also it can solve freezing in some cases.

The poll at the moment reflect much of my beliefs.
There is tat leas one member of the board who are imature.
Theres twice as many who has no broblems with their via 686B motherboard (if their buddys has problems it still does'nt count)!
And a lot of people that just plain hates VIA.

If the problems with the 686B was so big and severe that the via haters want to make it, the poll would have reflected it.

I feel realy sorry for those who have problems.

Could some of the nice moderators repair the poll?

                        VERSE 1:

Well I can remember like yesterday

My puppy got run over by a Chevrolet

My daddy said, “he’s gone, son, you’re gonna have to say goodbye”

I never could do it, no matter what he said

I refused to believe my dog was dead

Now I can see this is happening all over again

                        CHORUS:

It ain’t looking like you and me

                        Are gonna ever be we

I ain’t nothing you’ll ever want, that’s plain to see

But me, oh my, how I wonder why I

Can’t ever let a dead dog lie

                        VERSE 2:
Well, I oughta give up, but I just keep tryin
Keep lookin for that love light that just won’t shine
Refuse to believe that you can’t never be mine
I guess that it’s true, the things that I do
Cause the pain that I go through
But dead dog memories don’t fade away with time

                        CHORUS

No I can’t never let a dead dog lie

That was only an explanation of the phrase... look now

some people have other things going on and can't do it exactly when you wish it to be done

Indiana there is an "onoffical" patch to get the digital out working on sound blaster live cards in win2k. (AC3 pass thru, movies only)
There are some discussions on it in the archives
It works with both sp1 and sp2.

have it installed and it works very well, mmmm..AC3 in DVD playback

it also works with optical on addon from hoontech
