So there you have it ... keep the P2B board, the BX boards are still very good, dont show their age that much ... get an AbitSlotKET and plug your 800 in and you have a very good rig ... i know, i know, the CPUs are now in >1.5Ghz region, but its quite an improvement from a P2-400, no? Good luck DizzyNoodle ... and tell us how it goes ...

Correction ... sorry for the misstatement (PUI ) but the Gigger I'm running is a Slot 1 CPU, so no slotket, yet it does hang on occasion and there isn't a way for me to fudge the voltage. The 850 I was running was in the slotket and running at nominal voltage of 1.70v. I traded it to my friend for his Gigger which he couldn't get to run on his P2B-LS. We only got my 850 running on his system by bumping the voltage (via slotket jumpers) to 2.05v. We've discussed P2B CPU upgrades on the MURC many times before. Try a search.<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>

A normal P2B rev 1.03 or later should be able to house a better CPU when using a slotket. My other mobo, and old P2B rev 1.02 wouldn't start up with the slotket/P3-750.
So check the revision of mobo you have, check if you have the latest BIOS for it, and try a slotket/CPU combo. It's cheaper than a new mobo/CPU combo IMO.

The fastest P3 you can't. A P3 still doing 100 MHz FSB would be your best get, be it SLOT 1 or through a slotket. If your revision mobo can do 133MHz FSB or higher, you can go for a slotket/FCPGA CPU in the 833 and higher category.
If not, even a Celeron 800A (100MHz) at 8x100 is still faster than your P2-400 !!

I'd recommend a slotket because you 1) have the ability to bump the voltage if need be and 2) you'd have better luck finding a new MB for your new FC-PGA CPU rather than trying to hunt down another slot 1 MB. You probably would be able to run a P!!!/850 FC-PGA via an Abit SlotKET!!!, like I did. First you need to check what revision you have (look by AGP slot, under "ASUS" silkscreen label). I reference a web site in some of the P2B threads which gives you a good idea on what the limit of your particular MB is.<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>

Yes, the revision number indicates a change in the implementation of the MB. Newer revisions generally have an easier time of running the newer CPUs. Here's the site that will recommend specific slotkets and CPU speeds for your particular revision. The site is a little out of date but its a good place to start. There are differences in the slotkets so you may want to try an Abit or ASUS slotket if you can't boot with your $5 part.<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>

Nothing much Dizzy. Just make sure that you power down completely (switch off at the back of your case), decharge yourself at the open casing and remove the old CPU. Change the jumper setting for the speed to 7.5, while leaving the FSB at the 100MHz it was at. Then put in the new CPU until it's firmly locked, and re-power your PC. In the BIOS, if you get there, I would advice changing everything to default factory settings before tweaking it again, and save settings on leaving.
Nothing more

Did not work ;(
I tried to place the new CPU in DID NOT WORK !!! I changed the jumper settings to to 7.5X did not help, ileft it the way it was and i am still running on it now on 7.5X with my P!! 400 ! Seems to be like normal any sideeffects ?!? My Revision is 1.10, so i believe a Slot i PII 750 should work...what's going wrong here ?!?!?
Or did i get this wrong ?
Maybe according to this document I need to use a slotkey and a 370 chip, right ?

That site shows that they got a FC-PGA CuMine100 running on your MB with the same BIOS, 1012, but at 1.80v, not the default 1.70v. How are you going to adjust the voltage now that you didn't listen and buy a slotket? What are your CPU production specs? i.e. s-code (prod code), batch #, pack date, plant?Last edited by xortam; 25 August 2001, 15:19.<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>

LOL
I have returned the SLOT1 CPU ! NO worries ! The reason why went for it in the first place was because 5 guys i asked in the stores told me NOW way will it work with a 100MHZ BUS board and were not willing to return the CPU if it did not wirk ! SO i challenged this one guy and he said take the SLOT1 if it does not work bring it back and I'll give you a PIII 800 socket370. SO i did ! NOw i have a PIII 800 with the following specs on it
Intel 01 Costa Rica
800/256/133/1.75
3112a634 - 1998
Pentium [[[ SL 52p
Will this one work now ? I have to try when i get home, any ideas to make this one work ?
HOw can o tell if the Slot key will adjust the voltage [on the P2b]for this CPU ? The guy told me that the slotkey he gave me is an automatic one no need for manula settings of jumpers ! He could not explain well wether that was for the VOltage or something else...
