Hmm... I've had my 40 Gig for a couple months now, and so far no problems. Hope it stays that way . I have the HD in a bay right behind my dual case fan, so maybe that'll help prevent any overheating.
Well, at least they are consistent.
My second drive just went out.
1, The were made in Aug & Sept of last year.
2, They lived life as part of a raid so they had the same mileage.
3, They died within one week of each other.
4, Right off hand I'd say IBM has a BAD problem.

I was going to buy a 60GB 60gxp to complement my (working for months) 45GB 75gxp, but now I might have to pair it with a (gag)Western Digital.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.
I've lost count of how many Maxtors I have around here.
I have 8 editing systems with RAID's. All boot, removable & accessory drives and all but one RAID (the GXP based one in the RT-2000 rig) are Maxtor based. I've never had to replace any of the Maxtors.
The 4 75GXP's in the RT2K's RAID are early production and so far OK.
I've replaced 1 of my 3 Fujitsus under warranty in the last 2 years. Took <36 hours.
I've thrown 3 Seagates out the window. That brand never to grace my workbench again.
I have 1 WD in a removable case and I'm watching it closely since WD's and IBM's share common technology.

That depends on the WD drive. I don't know what the current state is exactly, but WD drives are no longer just remarks of IBM's.
Their new drive performs better than any IBM IDE.

I never had an IBM hardrive but my quantum fireball gave up just after a year and a few months of operation luckily i had the warranty and they replaced it with a Fujitsu, but I’m still nervous because my friends Fujitsu just a month a go went bonkers. And he had a similar model as I have now What is going on here, they are dieing like flies from a bug spray.
