    HELP!!!!

    ALBPM, KvH...anyone...Help!

I brought home a Rotel RB-1070 to audtion, but I can't get it to work!!! I plugged a pair of interconnects fromt he preouts on my Denon AVR-3802 to the coresponding inputs on the Rotel. Plugged in the speaker cables to the Rotel and..

    HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!!!

Just a loud blaring noise. No beautiful music... Is there a special function I need to enable on the AVR-3802 for the Preouts to work right???

    HELP!!!

EDIT 1: After some brainstorming with Greebe, we figured out that the Rotel is fine. I plugged my laptop into the Rotel via a 1/8" -> RCA adaptor and it worked. So the big question is, how do you turn on the preouts on the AVR-3802? Or is my Denon broken...? Back to more testing...

Sounds like feedback to me.. did you have the units on when you plugged the thing in? doh!

It's almost certainly an issue with the preout, yes. I'm not that familiar with the Denon equipment, but if it has an onscreen setup menu you might find a way to configure it there.. when all else fails though.. read the manual.

Honestly, though, there's no reason that preout should have to be configured. Try taking it back to the dealer to see if there's something wrong with it, once you've tried plugging it in while unplugged from the wall and you've checked out the setup thing. Did you use the main preout or a record output? A record output is NOT what you want.. that will be at 100% gain all the time and might be creating the distortion you are hearing.

When you guys are ready to go for broke you can get one of those high end preamp/processors. I sold a friend/customer a Lexicon MC12 and helped him set the thing up. He has an HTM1 for his center, Pro series Klipschorns (go figure) for his mains, a pair of CDM9NTs for side surrounds and a pair of Nautilus 804s for rear surrounds. He also has a Velodyne HGS18 subwoofer. We sat and watched some scenes from a few movies once we had it set up.. unbelievable what detail us poor ordinary folk are missing in soundtracks. The Matrix was constantly surprising me with stuff I'd never heard before. We also watched parts of The Phantom Menace and the Japanese attack from Pearl Harbor which was just awesome. You guys need to buy Pearl Harbor. The sound in that movie is just incredible.

I am using the main preouts, not the REC preouts. I've tried everything I can think of. Moving each piece to different outlets. Shutting them both down while plugging in cables. Using different cables...nothing seems to fix it. The cables I'm using are Audio Quest Copperhead interconnects that I have on loan from the store, so I highly doubt that's it.

I pluged my laptop into the preouts, and sent the signal to the Mic in and the preouts worked! There was an audible buzz in the background at any volume you ran the Denon at. The strangest thing is that after I plugged the speakers back into the Denon, I noticed that there is a buzz in the tweeter on the left speaker. You can only hear it when you are standing next to it, not while you are seated. Source doesn't matter, it buzzes on everything.

I'm beginning to think my Denon is FUBAR. *sigh*

It sounds like the 3802 may be FUBAR. I didn't have to make any adustments for the 3300. I disconnected the speaker wires, plugged the inteconnects to the pre-outs on the 3300 and then plugged the pre-outs into the back of the Rotel. I then connected the speaker wire to the Rotel and all was fine.

You shouldn't be able to damage the 9NT's from just the output from the 3802 so, I would take the 3802 back and exchange it.

Hey KvH, did you contact Purist Audio Designs yet to get samples of their cable?? I tried calling you yesterday but you weren't at work yet.

I got the cable for the HTM1 Thursday. I just got home from work and the doorbell rang. It was the sales manager from Hudson's Audio. He couldn't find my phone #'s so he personally delivered my cable. Now that's the "BEST" service I have ever gotten from any local store.

So much for the cable dosen't make any difference theory. These cables made it sound like I made another speaker upgrade. The detail is increadible!! I didn't think the HTM1 could get any better than it already was. These cables seem to have extended the low range another octave lower and have sweetened the mid and hi range.

I highly recommend the DVD of "The Fith Element " to push the full range of your system.

The store doesn't open until Tuesday, so it'll be a couple of days before I can get everything straightened out. My 9NT is definately shot though. The feedback loop hit while the speakers were plugged into the Rotel, so that'll be a much harder hit than if it was the Denon. Although the Rotel RB-1070 is only rated to 130 W and speakers are rated to 200 W, so in theory it shouldn't damage it.

...and I just got all my new toys...

On the bright side, I'm getting all new toys to replace them =)

EDIT: I figured out what's wrong with my right speaker. The tweeter is blown! That or something in the circuitry is messed up, because the tweeter doesn't turn on, thus the muffled sound, because there's no high frequency. The tweeter on the left has a buzz in it, but only when connected to the Denon, so I don't think it's a speaker problem. I'm gonna check for a break in the HF cable in my bi-wiring scheme and then let everything be until the shop opens on Tuesday.

              ROFL!!!!

I brought my equipment into Audio Port today, and they verified that the preouts on the Denon were messed up, ordered a new tweeter, etc... Thier warranty rep gave them store credit and they gave me a new Denon AVR-3802, since it didn't work with the Rotel amp and I had a buzz in my left tweeter.

Just for grins, my sales rep plugged the new, out-of-the-box, Denon AVR-3802 into a Rotel amp. And wouldn't you know, the exact same thing happened. Looks like a little ->| |<- slip made it past Denon QA... They're going to talk with a Denon trainer/rep and see what's up. I still got to take home the new AVR-3802, which solved my tweeter buzz on the left side. You'd think Denon would check for DC voltage leaks in their preouts before they shipped them.

Looks like the Rotel is on hold until Denon figures out the preout problem.
