Win XP VS Win2K

hwy all,

now that i have fixed the new 80GB drive, updated my mobo from P2B to P3B-F ... i'm ready to reformat my HDD i'm wondering whether i should go for winxp professional... ? I just installed it on my old PII machine and it does seem a bit slower than usual... that is with all the fancy GUI stuff turned off or set to performance...

what do you think, win2k or winxp for digital imaging and NLE... ?

not quite sure what i benifit from it running on win2k... or are u recommending a solution if i go XP...

what have u done with your combo ?

I gave up waiting for both Ahead and Roxio to announce support for the darn thing. Packed it up, returned it, got an Yamaha CRW2100E in exchange - support available immediately and no hassles under both W2K and XP.

(I now suddenly find the HP12 models to be no longer available here either - maybe that is why the guys were holding out?)

Win2k seems alot more stable. I've two computers with XP on and both crash at times while they worked happily under win2k.
Two others who've also tried Xp also have reported crashing so I'd wait for the outcome of the first service pack.

XP is substantially faster and more stable.

Any decreased speed you are seeing is due to one of the following things:

1. Extra services. Go into service manager and turn 'em off if you don't need 'em. Do you REALLY need the portable audio device manager service? I mean, who in god's name actually uses Media Player to manage their device? There are LOTS of services in there that do nothing for you. You can turn off about half of 'em.

2. Crappy drivers. Check and see if there are XP-specific drivers for your hardware. Video card companies are playing catch-up, their drivers are often to blame for inferior speed.

3. Graphical doo-dads. Even with WinXP drivers, few video cards support all the blending and fading effects of XP, forcing the processor to do all the work. Additionally, drop shadows alone can KILL performance.

4. System Restore. It's ugly, it's huge, and it only helps during setup. Once your hardware and major programs are all installed, turn it the hell off.

5. Remote management crap. Turn off the services, turn off the features, and you'll not only run faster - you'll be MUCH more secure!

Ok, that's all I could think of off the top - but once your machine is tweaked up... XP is FASTER than Win2k. I/O speed is improved, as is the driver model.

Well in my case and my friends it isn't more stable thats one upgrade and three clean installs. I had a nice time spamming microshaft with error reports today. Well XP did keep asking me to send the system errors in.

Wich OS is most stable "out of the box"?

All OS'ses can be tweaked into "rock" stability!

(Even Compaq's!!

I'l guarantee that with enough cement it wont budge... )

My first encounter with XP was terible!

Win2k hands down. XP even buggered my win2k dual boot system up even though I stuck it on a seperate partition. Poor win2k has been unhappy since.

where do you disable all these things? i mean where is the service manager? i have disabled sys restore and remote stuff from sys properties but where's the other stuff?

Windows XP worked better for me, even with my low-end system. Everything that keeps me away from W9x kernel is good.

mrtj1, press Crtl+Alt Del and go to the tab "processes".

To disable them completely, select "Run..." and type in "services.msc". Then set everything you don't need to "Disabled" startup, and things you seldom need to "Manual" startup. I'm a "performance freak" myself, so I have gone back to the Win2K desktop Here's my XP system after some tweaking (click on the desktop for a larger image):
