  • Modem problem

    Hello Everyone

Yesterday I went to my mates house to help him to get his pc up and running, but I ran in to troubles my self. When his pc gave up he used a recovery CD, which all it did was reformatted his pc, however he lost his ID number for Win98. So I brought mine ID number and surprise, surprise it worked.

All went well until the installation of the modem, it all installed well but for some reason when you press new connection wizard and when you try to dial to your ISP it doesn’t. You get a message that the modem is not recognised and it asks me to check if the modem is switched on, or some other application is using it. BTW there is no squeaking or any sign of life in the process.

However the modem shows up properly in the control panel and there are no yellow question marks in a device manager, I reinstalled the drivers numerous times and I still get the same message. I checked all the dial settings like region codes and everything seems fine, I’m out of ideas what to do next.

The modem is “U.S. Robotics 56k Voice Win”

Have any of you guys have this thing and could help me to solve this problem?

    Thank you.

have you tried removing the modem in device manager rebooting & let windows redetect it?

Yes I have done that when the modem was detected on tart up, I installed the default drivers from Win98, however when I was installing it warned me that the drivers might not work with this modem, I proceeded anyway since the drivers that came with a modem didn’t work either.

I also tried running the modem in Safe mode, but it didn’t work either.

Hehe I have a feeling it some stupid setting in a driver one click away, otherwise what else can it be

        OK....lets see........

        Have you?
        1) Looked at the (PC) manufacturer site for updated drivers or a bug report describing this type of issue?

2)Gone into Control Panel\Modems\Diagnostics then clicked More Info in the properties of the modem/com port to see if it is responding?

3)Tried manually installing a Standard Modem (driver-ways)to see if that will activate the modem?

        Let us know......

        PS...who made the PC?

The problem with a manufacturer is that it’s gone bust; I can’t now remember the name of the PC.

As you suggested Dilitante I tried that diagnostics thing and I got a message that it could not open some folder, I can’t remember exactly what was it.

I think when next time I go to see him I will bring Net Optimiser it puts a modem through series of tests and commands to diagnose the problems. Hmm I think I also will try to find a newer drivers for it, I hope they will fit on a floppy.

Sounds like the dialup networking wasn't installed properly. So take your win98 cd along if it's the same version and uninstall the dialup networking and modem. Reboot and re-install the dialup networking if it detects the modem cancel it for now and let it end up as a unknown device.
Once the dialup networking is re-installed reboot and then install the modem and then run diagnostics. If the machine can't talk to the modem is probably up the spout unless theres another device using the same port. If thats the case it will say the port is already open. Try and locate the device/software and disable it. Then try the diagnostic again after a reboot.
Drivers for your modem you should be able to get from the following link.
Error 404 - Something must have gone wrong for you to get here! Please head back to the USR home page, use the search page, or try the sitemap.

Funny I managed to post this before I pressed the post button and last thing I typed in didn't get posted wierd.
Theres also a troubleshooting guide on the page which you may find useful.

Hi Pit I have done how you suggested, but I get still the same problem when pressing diagnostics button it says can't open comnPort. So i took the modem and took it to mine PC to see if the modem isn't faulty. I put it in to my pc boot up WinXP and wola its working perfectly so I restart and boot up win98 and bump it deos exactly the same thing, as it did on his computer. So i load up Sisft sandra to see what’s happening and it say WARNING device is using communication port 2 As far as I remember that is the port where you would connect your old mouse. I am really confused in what it is happening and would appreciate if anyone could help to solve this mystery.

I have had the exact same problem Kastuvas.

When I instaledl my 56K modem with the setup program under win98 it used com port 2 instead of com port 3.

I'm not sure about the solution anymore (I've got an adsl line now and don't use my modem anymore) but it's the fault of the setup program I only got this problem with the win98 drivers the win2k drivers always worked like a charm.

I believe I always installed the driver manually so I could choose which com port the modem should use to communicate.

I hope this helps a bit.

What an annoying little piece of shit this modem is I connect that little bugger to my little brothers computer which is P120 with win98 and bastard is working.

BTW when i try to install it manually I don’t get the option to choose Com 3, only Com1, Com2 and LP1 which are all external poerts Agrrrrrrrrrr this could go to the most hated hardware thread.

                    Hi,

Ran into a similar problem myself only about two weeks ago. (PSU died and replaced everything).

Anyway, have you tried changing the Internet dialing options so it uses that specific modem? As in, in IE, go Internet Options, go to Connections tab, then select you dial up settings and then proprties and make sure that it is using your US Robotics modem, otherwise it won't use it.

The internet options isn't the problem since Kastuvas hasn't managed to even get his modem installed correctly. Kastuvas ... its not a hardware problem. Go to the USR site and get the latest drivers. Remove your modem from the device list (including checking in Safe Mode). Install your modem with the updated drivers. Don't bother going any further until you can run the diagnostics sucessfully from the modem properties control.

You're right, I've misread some of the problems. A diagnosis not turning up was before I sorted out the driver. The fix I posted was a possible fix for not being able to send or receive anything through the modem instead. Sorry!

Kastuvas I reinstalled my modem in my dad's computer, had to open it already because the cd-rom drive doesn't opens anymore hope I can fix that piece of hardware.

When I use the setup program it uses com port 2 to communicate but when I deinstall the driver and I let windows detect the modem and manually choose the driver location the modem installs fine (com port 3).

But you already tried this and I didn't work so maybe I got another solution.

Search your registery for the key value PORTNAME and change it from COM1 to COM3 maybe that works.

How do you go through the system registry? Is it one of the win98 utilities? Programs>>Accessories>>System tools and then select one of the programs.
Or is it somewhere in one of the system.ini files?

Start menu -> Run and type "regedit" this will start the registery editor.

Then do a search (CTRL + F) for the key PORTNAME you can check if you found the right one as you can see some other keys that contains your modem name and model etc. The key is somewhere located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> ENUM -> PCI.

Make sure you've got a backup of your registery so you can always switch back if something should go wrong.
