Better back up all of your data before you start dicking around with the Registry Kastuvas! You shouldn't have any problems if you do a proper deinstall and reinstall. If your modem is conflicting with your mouse than simply deinstall both and let Windows figure it out ... its a lot safer than hacking away at a corrupted system.

Did you get the latest drivers from the USR site? What is the model number of your modem?

The full name of the modem is U.S Robotics 56K Voice Win 1806
On their website they onle have drivers for the 2845A or something.

I searched for "1806" on the international USR site and found some drivers and an installation doc. His modem is a PCI Winmodem. Many here would chime in about now and tell him to dump that and go out and buy a real modem since Winmodems are problematic and poor performers. Install the referenced drivers and get back to us ...

I can understand if you don't want to put any more effort into a Winmodem but you should still be able to get it to work if you want to still try. You know the modem is o.k. because you saw it work in your brother's PC. Check to see which driver your brother's PC is using. Check the integrity of your friends system: Scan the disk for errors. If the OS install wasn't a fresh install (it seems it was based on your first post) then you could run the system file checker to make sure those files weren't corrupted. Install all the latest patches by visiting the Windows Update site.

Check and see if com3 is even there. Under Control Panel\system\Device Manager\Ports If its not there just do an add hardware.
I have had this happen and had to tell windows to install that comport.
