  • Farging XP!

Boy I can't win with Windows XP. I had a system crash back Saturday and did a reinstall Sunday and was pretty much back up and running as of last night. Well I shut down my PC this morning before going to work, and I come home and start her up...I leave my room and I'm greeted with a STOP 0x0000007E error. I goto MS support site and MS Technet and they dont tell me Jackshit about what this error is. I check the MS newsgroups and theres some postings about this error, but it seems to me that everyone is able to at least get XP to boot or funtion in one way or another. No luck here...I try safe mood, last known good, etc without any luck what so ever. I'm fustrated with this POS OS that MS has come out with. I'm at a loss to figure out what the hell the problem is with it, since I ran Win2K Flawlessly before I installed my copy of XP in December. Since then I've must have reinstalled about 4-5 times with 4 of them being unplanned reinstalls.

In my lastest install I had nothing but the MS drivers besides the Raedon 8500 drivers and SB Audigy drivers. I checked my IBM Drives to see if they where going bad and they checked out a-ok. I ran a memory test and no problems with my System RAM either.

I'm open to any suggestions....Seriously considering Shitcanning the board and getting a new Mobo with a Promise RAID PCI card controller at the rate I'm going .

I'll have to see how long this install last...last one lasted not even 48 hours. I need to remember to bring home my W2K disk from work and try that out to see what happens.....ugh!!!!!!!!!

hmmm...I hate it when that happens

Seriously though. I can honestly say wihtout a doubt that WinXP has been the most stable OS for me. It seems have a similar setup to yours. Please list detailed specs. Here are mine:

    Asus A7V266-E
    Athlon 1.2G @ 1.3G
    512MB Mushkin PC2100 DDR memory
    SB Audigy Platinum
2xIBM 40GB HDD RAID 0 ATA-100 on built in Promise Controller
    Radeon AIW 32MB DDR
    HP CD-RW 10x4x32
    Lian-li Aluminum Case
3com Etherlink XL nic(connected to the old school Motorola BitSurfer cable modem)
    Samsung DVD Player
Using up to 4 USB ports at any given time

I use only the drivers that Windows Update wants me to use. I want stability so unless there is a problem, I won't bother with other drivers. I should tell you though I have tried many drivers without any problems. Those include VIA, ATI and Creative.

Not sure what your prob is, but let's compare specs and go from there.

I edited my post with my Sig...

oh yeah not OverClocking the system now

After the lastest install I only have the Highpoint drivers (2.0.xxx from last October..I've had the best luck with these ones), the 6043 leaked drivers for the Raedon8500 and the SB Audigly Drivers from the CD and the XP update from the SB site. Everything else is from Install CD or from the Windows update.

As in a previous thread try installing the boot/system on a non RAID drive. If you need a RAID configuration for a data drive by all means give it a try, just not for the system. I believe this configuration will prove to be stable. If this turns out to be true, disable the onboard RAID controller and buy a good add-in RAID card instead of a whole new motherboard. You can then try a fresh install of XP on RAID.

I had the same exact experience last month, gave up on the onboard RAID, switched to straight IDE ATA100 for my system drive and haven't had a glitch since.

        BTW are you at Monmouth?

Better yet: don't even go there to start with

I relegated XP to a removable beta drive ONLY and won't let that POS near any system drive with anything important on it.

Problems that you are experiencing are in no way XP's fault. They are most likely due to one of the following:

                1) Bad memory (most likely cause, about 20% of crucial/micron crap is bad)
Solution - use memtest 86, replace memory if errors found
MemTest86 is the original self booting memory testing software for x86 and ARM computers. Supporting both BIOS and UEFI, with options to boot from USB.

                2) Via chipset (second likely cause)
                Solution - replace the motherboard

                3) Overheating AMD CPU (third likely cause)
Solution - either get a normal cpu or get a 90000 rpm fan

                  1. I use nothing but Crucial memory, and it all tests good.

                  2. No VIA chipsets. Intel only.

                  3. No AMD CPU's on those systems tested with XP.

Funny that all the problems went away with Win2K. I don't think any of the above would have.

Hmm, we even got blue screens on DELL computers here at work, no problems with Win2K tough.
                    Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI

In what way was it a disappointment? I still have yet to see anything bad about this OS, barring the GUI which, although a bit of a hog, can be disabled easily enough.

Since I installed Win XP my OS have never been more stable than it is now !!!!!

It runs more smooth than a d*** in a well oiled p**** !!

                          Errors .. what's that ....

Sure .. it's got some issues with some older games .. but nothing I can't handle.

I have used XP on a P3 700@1050 on an Asus CUSL-C2 i815E with 256 MB ram. smooth sailing.

and I'm currently running it on an Athlon XP 1800+ on an Epox 8KHA+ VIA KT266A with 512 MB CorsAir PC2400 DDR Ram !!!

and I can say without doubt, that XP is THE most stable OS I have ever used even though it also is the OS which I have installed and then removed the most apps/games/utils on !!!

Which shows the problem with it: it's compatabliity is spotty.

You can run it fine while others with higher specced gear cannot. This makes it a very risky proposition for upgraders while Win2K-SP2 is very much more compatable with more systems.
