Come on guys whether you feel Linux is great or not (I like it) it is very, very scarey that there is no serious desktop OS competition on x86 don't you think? While I'm not a Microsoft hater I do think Windows becomes a staler, more bloated OS version of Homer Simpson with every release and service pack.

Personally I think it is a crying shame that BeOS did not survive, that really did look to be the future of a real OS on x86 but they were stifled by the MS monopoly and it died just like OS/2

We desperately need OS competition on this platform, maybe Linux ain't quite right, I'd love to see OS X on x86 but that is never going to happen. So what other knight in shining armour is there to ride in and save us with a lean modern operating system?

Nah, apple had a large part with their demise by not giving them the info required to make it run properly on the G3 procs. a lot of support that it had died when they shifted focus over to the Intel platform. from their it was the companies own fault for trying to go to the Internet Applicance market... granted, they had BeOS running with a webbrowser off of a floppy, but still... they changed focus away from what was their bread and butter and let what market they had out in the cold...

Still is a shame tho. one of the best and most promising operating systems of the 90's.

if you want a lean operating system without the inconvinence of having to port all your apps to it, try FreeBSD. its a bit more... technical... than linux, but if you are finding yourself frustrated by the fact that your linux distro scatters files all over everywhere, or doesn't put /usr/local/bin in the path by default, give it a shot. its a lot more stable and consistant than linux has ever been. A lot of linux stuff either runs native on FreeBSD or runs in linux emulation on FreeBSD. you can even get DRI working in freebsd, and i believe use the Matrox drivers....

I think you'll find it was broken in the early versions of six. However I haven't got any of the cd's around to correct or verify my memory. If wasn't six it was the last versions of five.

The last time I tried Redhat it couldn't detect my promise controller and there weren't any drivers available from Promise. Okay that wasn't Redhats fault.

Perhaps Apple ought to port OS X over to the pc. The funny thing about this was when it came out little or no programs ran under it. Strangly very little fuss was made about it.

Ok gave Mandrake a try and will uninstall it tomorrow since it was slow and I could not get it to boot in smp mode most of the features did not work plus it crashed on me a couple of times! Will have to try the latest Red Hat later this week and hope they have got the damned thing to work!

I agree with some that this discussion is best served over in the General Hardware/Software forum.

                    Gurm

Fonts and Linux: Linux doesn't destribute any "decent fonts" with linux because there a very few good (gnu)free fonts. But if you install office, or get your own fonts from whatever source, they can be used with linux,(True type fonts can be convert for linux)

Mac OS X could easily be ported to x86. OS X is a flavor of Unix like Linux is. The Darwin kernel has been tested and functions well on Intel systems using 440BX chipset. The main barrier is device driver support.

I've often said that if Steve Jobs was as smart as everyone thinks he is, he would have ported OS X to x86 concurrently to its developement for Mac.

A more pragmatic answer is that a couple of years back, when Bill Gates gave Jobs $100 mil to keep Apple alive, one of the conditions was "No OS Porting!!!"

                      Damned shame.

No. You can get Darwin for x86.
What you can't get are the Apple windowing kits, like Cocoa. That's the stuff that makes OS X viable for so many people, but it's what makes Apple its money, too.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

Just for S&G I downloaded the Darwin x86 ISO image and burned a bootable disk. Naturally it didn't work on my VIA chipset system . Can't have everything, I guess.

My understanding is that it will work on the 440BX platform with Xfree86. Of course the additional layers (including Cocoa) which combined form OS X are out of the question as they are Apple-proprietary.

I've just taxed the limit of my knowledge on the subject!
