    Elie,

you jostled a question i had forgotten to ask...which is best...componet video or s-video? what are the main differences? what about fiber? heck, i'm not even sure but does the video move over the fiber connections or just sound??? what is opinion on the tv that i ordered??

    Muad'Dib,

i know jammrock and kvh are right, and i haven't even gotten the oppurtunity to listen to any of the equipment that they have reccommended. i sold my house and moved into an apartment 2 years ago...while i like living in an apartment right now, i also know that this is not permanent. i make to much money to stay here very much longer...i need a write-off.

i didn't want to put over 10K into the entire system when i started this project...i've already come close to that now with the stuff i've got comming, and i haven't even got the amp/avr or speakers yet. at this point i don't want to go over 3K for the amp/avr and speaker system.

hell, i'm not even sure my ears can discriminate the differences in the various amp/speaker combos' anyways.

which is better...low end amp w/good speakers or high end amp/low end speakers???

Overall the first. Differences between speakers are much easier to percieve than those between amps.
But then it's also important to "match" the amp to the speaker to get the best results...
But we named the *dog* Indiana...

Indiana, would you like to expand on the concept of 'matching' please.

Fiber is only used for audio and the quality won't be any different than Coax Digital.

Component video offers the best interface between a video signal source (e.g., DVD-Video player) and a video display (e.g., analog TV, Digital TV-HDTV set). Using three RCA-type jacks (see picture), the component video interface offers separate paths for the component signals making up a video signal. Component video jacks are available on most DVD players and better quality TVs. For best results, we recommend using gold-plated connectors.

Technically speaking, the component video signal is comprised of the luminance (Y) signal and separate chrominance (PR and PB) elements. The component video connection allows each signal to pass through its own medium, allowing delivery of a reference-quality picture with the most precise color presentation. Although the RCA jacks are usually color coded (see picture) as red, green, and blue, component video is not the same as or interchangeable with the RGB connection.

Indiana I think you mean matching the impedance, amp and speakers right?

Gold plated typically = gold wash... only thing halfway decient about this is the resistance to corrosion... even then it's normally penitrated by oxygen because it's only a few mil thick, so in reality it serves little purpose but marketing sales ads... and to jack the price

Myself I use optic simply cause it was cheaper. Am I wrong, but I thought I remember reading somewhere that optic has a higher bandwidth than coax? Correct me if I'm wrong please?

Actually, most places with high end stuff recommend Coax as opposed to optic from what I've seen - if analog is not an option (for CD at any rate).

Dimi, regardless of what the actual peak bandwidth is for either, both are overkill and thus both work equally the same... tho coax is typically cheaper than optical

Coax is generally preferred because it is less fragile than a toslink (fiber) cable. It also generally makes a connection which will not dislodge itself as easily. Frankly, I have used cheapie interconnects as "coax digital" cables, and they work fine.

Component Video cables are worth getting. They are a more pronounced upgrade from SVideo than is the upgrade from Composite to SVideo, in my experience.

Too bad my TV doesn't have component inputs. *sigh* Time to start saving for a new 16:9 aspect ratio HDTV Wish I could afford a nice DLP unit though

I knew both were overkill, but thought the peak bandwidth on the toslink higher. Thanks Mike.

Thanks for tellin me why all the salespeople say coax KvH. Knew there was a reason....

Keep savin Jammy.... BTW, don't you think you bought enough!?! LOL! (don't answer that, I know the answer.... )

Also Jammy, Sound Factor is gonna let me bring in the B&K from Audio Den tomorrow so I can compare it with the Rotel on the same rig. Gonna use the RCD 1070 and 9NT's probably.

                          Jammrock,

i wish i could take advantage of your hind-sight but at this juncture i think i'll go low-end on the reciever/amp equipment and sock a little extra into the speaker system(..~2K). i'll upgrade after a year or so...hopefully i'll be in different digs by then(..at my station in life a real nice condo is looking good right now!!)

i would like to get your, or anyone elses, opinion on infinity entra series.

I used Infinity, not Entra's though, before my B&W's. And uh...I still have by B&W's. Infinity in my opinion is like a designer version of something like Cerwin Vega or JBL. Good, but not as good as other speakers you can get for the same price. Phase Tech is a great example of a equally priced speaker that sounds world's better, but since you can't buy them at Best Buy or Circuit City, most people don't know about them. B&W has 2 speaker sets priced under my CDM line, that are much more affordable and probably sound a lot better than Infinity's.

I would still recommend going into the Rotel dealer on Saturday and at least check out the Rotel receivers. Then go to Circuit City and compare it to their best HK. Remeber...listen, listen, listen, listen to as many different things as time allows before you buy.

i do got saturday off for sure and i'll go!! it doesn't look like my tv is going to make it this week...dangit!!!!!!

i'm sure my path to knowledge will involve alot of upgrades. i do know that what ever i get now for speakers, i'll probably keep for a very long time. so i do want to do the speakers right(..~2K). if anything comes and goes it will be the periphrial componets and i'll piece mill that a little at a time till i get right.

i have a friend who lost his job and down on his luck who is somewhat of an audio buff who has nothing except a tv with built in speakers, i think i'm going to give him and his wifey the dav-c900 when i'm done with it...he doesn't know it yet. he'll fall out of his chair!!!
