XP is pretty damn nice for home use. I use 2K at work.

Windows XP is very good if it is properly tweasked and you use WinXP specific drivers. I use XP at home and on my work laptop. For work I use Win2k SP2. Win2k is good, but I think XP has a bit more potential...when properly tweaked.

When I upgraded my Mobo(Different Chipset), CPU, RAM I booted for the first time with the XP CD in the drive.

*It asked me if I wanted to install ---> YES

*It asked me if I wanted to run SETUP----> YES

*Then it found my Windows folder on the C drive and asked me if I wanted to REPAIR-----> YES

It went through the long drawn out setup, asked for the CD key and then copied files but did not Reactivate.
It rebooted and that was it. Runs like a Champ.

Rags is the XP Tweak Master. I used his setup routine and have no problems.

And I was a WN98 first edition hold-out for my home system

I've used WN2K at work since it's release and never even considered it for Home.

Nothing between them at heart, but XP probably has more bugs and flaws still to be uncovered. An SP2'd (and then SP3's) Win2k will probably be better.

I've recently built two PCs for colleagues, one on 98SE, one on XP. We use Win2k at work and I wouldn't dream of it for these people for home use.

XP setup is so easy: Just boot from the CD, let it install. After a couple of reboots connect the nic to my router & run Autoupdate - 47MB of drivers & updates later and its finished. Couldn't be easier. Simillar when installing Office 2k. And I know it'll run the games his daughter wants no problem.
As I said earlier, no reactivation issues here with legitimate use of the campus version.

Funny all my win2k setups have been like that but not XP. I'll give it another try when the SP1 comes out.
However Win2k the only time that has balked when a Hard disk has failed which isn't really surprising.

i installed xp on a friends computer earlier today, and it is running very well. i got rid of the fisher price stuff, made a couple of partitions, downloaded all the updates, and it seems nice and stable and fast.

i think i may go with 2k as i am worried about the future issues with xp, but i shall keep a 'backup' cd of xp just incase

                                A simple question:

Those of you that have had no problems what so ever with XP,
                                What version did you have?

                                Professional or Home?
