Go to your local computer show, you can get loads of bargins (as long as you don't ask where they came from)

Monitors is one thing you don't get a lot of choice in at shows in the midlands. They are usually things like AOC 17" for £109 etc, with possibly the odd TFT.

Even when I used to frequent the west-london show circuit, most of the monitors were used.

www.computerfairs.co.uk is a good place to find a show.

Well if were noting places to avoid, personally i'd steer clear of Watford, Tekheads, and 'TheOverclockingStore'.

I've compiled a nice list here

When you own your own business you only have to work half a day. You can do anything you want with the other twelve hours.

I've used ebuyer once. A memory stick came through OK via GPO but the hard drive I ordered at the same time came via TNT. They tried to deliver it once and returned it to ebuyer less than 24hrs after their first attempt to deliver (why?). It took ebuyer more than 3 months to refund my money, and I'm sure that it only happened when I finally emailed them that I would be contacting Barclaycard for a refund due to a no show on the goods. The refund came through the following day.

I usually use Simply(who seem to have an identical catalogue to global direct, who we use at work) or Insight.

I have been screwed by overclockers.co.uk and have seen others in the same position.

Most companies are fine if they have the item in stock and can deliver it without damaging it. I have ordered thousands of pounds worth of kit through ocuk and admittedly only had to take back a cpu and two motherboards. However, it took weeks of hour long phone calls and ultimatley a drive down to sort them out.

They delivered a cpu which was sold as new. The core had been damaged and was covered with silicon. The creditcard people are still looking into it

They are a small time company who seem to be doing well for themselves. But their customer service is dire. I will not touch them again!
The Welsh support two teams when it comes to rugby. Wales of course, and anyone else playing England

Both Overclockers and Scan have been in pc plus for bad customer support. My own dealings with them also bare this out. Both are okay if the product works but if it doesn't expect difficulties in exchange and refunds.
To ensure full protection with your credit card you need written evidance that they'll refund any monies due against your credit card. The only company I know that will do this are Dabs. I emailed a long list of companies over this saying I wish to spend £2000 pounds with them Dabs was the only company to reply on the matter. I decided the rest didn't want my business.
