Dogbert, can you access the PPTP server from the ICS host?
See if Q309524 applies in your case. Yes it's an XP article but you should be able to do the same thing in 2K.

How is this not true? Win2K requires your host to be 192.168.0.1 when enabling ICS. (Q241769) Setting that IP is a quick way to get up and running.

Didn't say you couldn't change IPs later, but thanks for the info.

Well... maybe I did'nt choose the right words to explain my point... but the main idea is there, u can run ICS on the IP u want... 192.168.0.1 is only a default configuration... but as u say... it's the quickest way.

I've read the Q241769... all it say is that u gotta make sure that 192.168.0.1 isn't used already by an other pc not running ICS. What I say is set your ICS at the IP u want and bypass the default values preconfigurated by microsoft.

Microsoft doesn't say that it can be used that way 'cuz they don't want people to know... 'cuz that's a feature of the server release of win2k.

Note.

For those that want to use ICS under a diffent IP... there is 3 settings to set... not 2 like in my first post.

1) Static IP
2) Gateway (ICS server)
3) DNS resolver with the machine name and IP of the ICS server

Orangejulius,

Thanks for your help, I managed to find this Q247431 in M$ site

Cannot Use Shared Internet Connection While Connected to a VPN
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

Symptoms
When you are using a shared Internet connection for a local area network (LAN) on a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and then establish a virtual private network (VPN) connection, the computers that are using the shared connection can no longer connect to the Internet.
Cause
When you establish a connection through a VPN, packets are by default routed to the default gateway on the remote network of your VPN connection.
Status
This behavior is by design.

What happens if you clear the checkbox: "Use default gateway on
remote network"?

I use WinRoute 4.1 at home, which lets you route between any IP addresses you want without any special fiddling.
However, I'm beggining to strongly suspect its the cause of a wierd problem I'm having with Half-Life, as detailed here.

/me is sooo stoopid
/me brain can be sold at a very high price as second hand - it's never been used

ICS works, stupid me tried to share using the Lan Connection 'share' tab instead of using the vPN dialup sharing tab.

I think my title suits me very well.

Hmm I usually run FreeBSD as desktop and NAT.
But sometimes when I want to play some games I boot to WinXP.
While ICS is working fine, I found it lacks some sort of monitoring or advanced features (like, limiting my flatmates' download limit so I can have decent ping).

In short, Linux is out for me.
