I think the same way, I wouldn't even replace the HS of my Parhelia, because I am too worried that I lose the warrenty.
But when I look around some forums where people are completely modding Ti4600 or many months ago Radeon 8500 cards (which were at least around 300$ when they were released) you can see that many people are taking the risk to destroy a >300$ graphics card with their modifications.
That's one of the nice things about my Leadtek right now. Comes with some heavy duty heatsink for the core and memory, plus Leadtek will honor the warranty even after overclocking the hell out of it. (Assuming the don't go out of business like Visiontek :/)
well how will matrox know if you have overclocked it, if it breaks just put it back together as it came from the factory send it back and im sure they wouldnt even worry about it, sure they may take a look at whats up withit but can they actually tell its been overclocked?i doubt it after all how can they prove it isnt just a dodgy chip?and if the alphas ran at 300mhz(is there any truth in this?) then with decent cooling why should the production boards have problems at this speed?
what kind of mod would result in a voltage increase? could it be forced through the motherboard or would it require h/w modding? can you volt mod any other companies chips?
is a flower best picked in it's prime or greater withered away by time?

Saw a nice tidbit in one of the reviews. Apparently the newest PowerStrip version already knows how to overclock the R9700
Considering the extra power-supply you should assume that the card gets hot, but.... have you seen the cards fan? It seems to be nearly the same crappy fan that ATI uses on their 8500 cards.
If that is true, I'm sure that the card can go quite a bit higher with proper cooling applied.

IMO that would be unfair towards matrox.
why should matrox give you a new 400$ card for free, if you ruined it because your modding skills wasn´t good enough.
it isn´t matrox fault if you ruined your card, so it is unfair towards them to expect them to pay for your screw-ups.
IMO, thats almost as bad as breaking in at matrox HQ, and stealing 400$ from them, either way matrox would loose 400$ because of somebody cheating them.

hmm the 9700 is the first piece of hardware i wouldn't bother to o/c. because for current games it is overkill³ anyway. maybe in a year or so i'd think about it.
Finally, the display interface of the R300 VPU and Radeon 9700 Pro we tested, has been goosed up a notch or two as well, with dual 400MHz DACs for super sharp output at high resolution. We were able to crank the resolution on our 22" Mitsubishi monitor all the way up to 1600X1200 at 85Hz with excellent clarity. Desktop color saturation and sharpness was not quite up to Matrox Parhelia levels for us. However, it was completely acceptable at high resolutions and drove slightly better desktop image quality than what we have seen on Radeon 8500 of GeForce 4 boards.

OK, maybe those peeps with P4 systems OC'ed to the moon and back maybe have a reason to OC it.
Which means it will scale very well with my current setup. I have a 1.2G 200MHz Athlon which I will upgrade to a 2100+ soon. Once the hammer comes out, it'll look even better. by then, I'll probably be thinking about my next video card
