I still don't understand, XP rune great ! It's a real good OS. That's my impression but I'm not the only one.

It's ok, I ran it for almost a year using a crappy PSU and bad memory so you can imagine the problems I've had! But now it runs good.

(I was trying to be dramatic, did it work?)

          Yeah it works
And I can imagine the issues you had. Random crashes and so...

Before I figured the problem was my ram, my OS used to get corrupt about 3 times a day, eventually I got it up and running for quite some time but whenever i encountered a problem I left it like that, My system was a REAL MESS before I removed the bad module. Now it runs great but I still get the odd crash (seldom), might be because I overclocked my cpu. (that and my heatsink/fan combo probably isn't the best)

az: I wasn't saying necessarily to upgrade 98SE to XP, but change the role of her machine from ICS server to ICS client - i.e. move the modem/NIC to your machine.

I don't know what your setup is, but having your XP box as a firewalled ICS server might be better. Just a suggestion cerb

                    IS SP1 out yet.

I'd wait for that and do some testing, perhaps dualboot for a while.

The most in the know Windows expert I know (He makes a living out of it) said XP is a step back. How many versions before Windows looks like Realplayer.

                      I made it!

It really looks like RealPlayer, and it's a little slow. But I like Cleartype (works on my DiamondTron NF), although fonts now seem a little bit blurred. The rest of the OS seems blurred even without CT

                      But I like it.

Pace: It's her modem, and her apartment - I'm moving out, so this would just be too much hassle. But to my surprise, I booted up, and after installing drivers, clicked on "internet" for the heck of it, and to my surprise, I was connected!? (her machine was running all the time) This OS is DANGEROUS!

                        Oh, a few questions...

                        - I like that XP recognises my mp3 folders as music folders, but I don't like them not being shown in detail. I know I can set all folders to look like the one I'm currently viewing, and I know I could go through all of my music folders manually and change their looks, one by one. But there are hundreds of them.

                        - I have decided I like Outlook Express best as an e-mail client. How do I make it secure?

I'm sure there are more questions, but I'm tired right now

                        Thank you for the help

XP is a very stable OS from my experiences and the new gui looks much more vibrant than the old drab win9x/win2k gui, and besides it is quite customizable

Here are a few of my responces to some stuff brought up in the thread:

                          - I have decided I like Outlook Express best as an e-mail client. How do I make it secure?
Install the latest patches, run Norton Antivirus in the background with email scanning enabled, don't do anything stupid like open unknown attachments and hope for the best...

                          - Enable XP firewall for your internet connection. It works.
Not if you have a home lan... then use zonealarm instead.

The KyroII just doesn´t have enough 2D functions to properly accelerate winXP
Interesting...Runs very smooth here on one machine that has a Duron 1.2 GHz and a Millennium I @ 1024x768x85Hz with all eyecandy turned on...

Yes, there are something you should know...

                            - StyleXP and http://www.themexp.net
                            - msconfig.exe is back!
                            - You might want to use large (48x48) icons, which look nice
                            - Try TweakXP
                            - If you are using a "special" version, don't apply SP1! It will lock you out.

And some more I can't remember at the moment...

And, more important, don't install WindowsXP. It's shit for kiddies.

I use XP at work. Lot's of eye candy but nothing special besides that. I hate WinXP.

I use Win2k pro at home and I'm quite happy qith it. Win2k is the best (least worst ?) piece of software written by M$ to date (except maybe for minesweeper )
