You have to use the newer ATI driver to get hardware-acceleration for those XP 2D features with an ATI card. The low score on XP bench shows that you currently don't have them enabled (which is why you don't notice a big difference).

There are some ways forcing hw acceleration with reg-settings, just do a search on Rage3D.

Hmm... Is there anything I can try BEFORE trashing my registry?

I find it strange that my controllers are detective as "standard" types, not SIS ones... I _THINK_ I have not installed any drivers (unless the SIS AGP driver 1.10 installs IDE ones as well), so SHOULD I do that?

Since you're obviously having problems you should install SIS' IDE drivers IF there are any available (dunno, I don't have a SIS mainboard).

I'll look at my system when I get home.

Sorry az about the off topic aspect, but I just noticed how similar Wombat's system will be to my new one:

                MSI 745Ultra with 1800XP, 512MB Samsung PC2700, Parhelia 128,SBLive!-MP3,Pioneer 10x DVD, Plextor 12/10/32A
                MSI 745Ultra with 2000XP, 512MB Samsung PC2700, Parhelia 128,SBLive!,Pioneer 10x DVD, Yamaha 6/4/16S

Maybe I should ditch the Yamaha (and IBM drives), and get some Plextor/Maxtor loving.

                *sniff*

                I love you.

az: I have my CD-ROM drives on the MB IDE connectors. They're using MS's IDE drivers, and running in DMA-2 mode.

Seriously, Drizzt, knock it off. If you don't have anything constructive to say, get out of the thread.

Thanks to DocMordrid, I overcame my PIO/DMA problem. Setting my HD to PIO once, then to DMA again worked

                          ahartman, the constructive thing is:
Don't install Windows XP unless you have the need to survive of a UI with rounded edge.
                          Dot.

Everything else on XP is currently shit.

Drizzt I kind of agree with you, but have you considered...

                                1. Ability to log in without logging another user (who is logged on) off.
                                2. Faster booting
                                3. ClearType
                                4. Hibernate
                                5. New preemptive multitasking architecture
                                6. System restore + device rollback (in ME, not 2K)
                                7. Firewall (okay may be not this)

                                And etc...
