I need a new hard drive to move my important data off my IBM 60GXP raid, I'd like to get one large one to replace my main partion and OS and use the RAID as video temp drive until it really fails. I want the fastest, about 60 GB and most definately less than 200 dollars. I also want it reliable. Any suggestions and/or personal accounts?

I like my D740s. 80GB, $118 from newegg, inc. shipping.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

I've got several Maxtor/Quantum D740X's, installed as singles, RAID0 and RAID5, and they work just fantastic.

        Western Digital 800JB $106.00 (80GB)
        Western Digital 1000JB $129.00(100GB)
        Western Digital 1200JB $159.00 (120GB)

Fastest IDE drives available on account of their 8MB buffer. I've worked with a handful of them and the difference they make is always impressive.

WD Caviars are by far the best IDE hard drives you can buy currently. Especially the SE 8MB buffer models, which will soon be only IDE drive left with 3 year warranty. They may be a little costier (few bucks), but you will love em, trust me

Hey, thanks everyone, I was leaning towards the WD's. I ended up buying the 100 GB SE version from Newegg.

Does the 8 MB buffer make much difference in A/V?

              To my understanding, yes.

In HDTach WD SE's speed is about 40MB/s, compared to Maxtor's 35MB/s...I am quite happy with mine, it isn't very noisy either.

Not true. There's the Maxtor MaxLine (Plus).

That's fine for OS & program installations, but it doesn't count for a lick for video editors since such small buffers saturate almost immediately during capture/playback.

The only buffers I've seen useful for that purpose are very large RAM caches (which of course requires a lot of system RAM) or the hardware caches on certain RAID cards. An example is the Promise SX4000 which lets you install up to 256 megs of PC100/133.
