Making my S4 Midiland 8200s (which, BTW, are *still* in the box from like, 2 years ago cause I'm too lazy to open them up and set them up and I'm fine with my MH-500s anyway) look damn antiquated.

The S4 Midiland 8200s v.2 got horrid reviews. I'm guessing my v.1 must be better I'll hook them up someday...

loss of image coherency due to the extra driver and additional phase shift added by having a passive crossover for the 641's satellites

Well there ya have it... if you want boom and loud get the Z560s.

I haven't heard the 641s. All reviews [except whatever Greebe just said] say they are excellent.

Speaker design is one on my Forte's, been doing it for over a couple of decades now

Actually you can modify the Z560's sub by either enlarging the cabinette a bit and or installing a variable bass port. Then you can make it sound either boomy/punchy or with a smooooooooth rolloff for classical

greebe, sorry I missed your statement on the 641s...thumbs up or down?

ps...to modify the 560s sub; complicated...or low tech and easy?

Well, in that case, you could just build yourself a subwoofer....using perhaps a Shiva woofer and a sealed 54L cabinet....

                Greebe,

You'd get along with my brother-in-law Jim down in FL, who makes his own speakers and does custom car-stereo installations.

He was recently on the local news down there when his wife discovered a 7' long crocodile under their car.

Jennifer Erskine was getting ready to head off to work when she noticed an alligator napping under her car.
She called police and a short time later a trapper came to the house, woke up the critter and wrestled it out from under the car.
After the protesting gator was tied and taped, the trapper took a measurement; almost seven feet long.
Husband Jimmy was awakened with the news.
                http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/VA-news/WD...2/072402.5.htm (scroll to bottom).

I was LMAO when I heard that story. The only things I get under my car in NY are cats.

                    Sure that wasn't a gator?

It's low tech... a saw, some MDF (medium density Fiberboard), caulking and a variable bass port (can be bought at places like Madisound, Zalytron etc)

I'm not giving either a thumbs up or down... depends on your taste more than anything. I'm just speaking technically of the difference

Woah! My thread just ballooned out.

Thx a lot for the info and opinions.

                      Greebe, aren't the Monsoon MH-505's 4.1? http://www.monsoonpower.com/mh505.shtml
What would you recommend as an alternative to 641/MH-505/Z560's?

K6-III, thx for the heads up, I'll see what info I can get from him. Regaurding the Diva Swans, I dunno... I am really set on getting some 4.1/5.1 action going. Besides, when I really want to enjoy music, I just break out the headphones.

Chamsalot, my brother has the Z560's and I do like them, but their imaging leaves a little to be desired. Mainly due to their one size fits all type sattelites. Don't get me wrong, I really like them as a system, but not exactly what I am looking for. I like precise imaging and SQ (check my sig for the headphones I use ).

bambam, thx for the heads up on the 641's. They look very interesting. Definitely worth finding a demo set to listen to.

For everyone, I listen to just about anything musical these days(anything with a good rythym/beat). Even some country!

I *wish* I could get some Midiland action going as well. Was interested in the 7100m speakers for a while.

Grail, you've just gotta pick something at this point. You're trying to spend $200 and get sound as good as $100 headphones. It's not going to happen. I have 5.1's for my computer, but it was only a $200 set, and I certainly don't expect them to sound anything like my Beyerdynamics, or my B&Ws in the living room.

                            That was a quick reply.

Thx for the info, but I already have some contacts to some of the computer stores. I can find their costs if I want.
I used to be in the computer sales biz and have heard some scary stuff about ATIC. I'll stick with my contacts for the time being.
I can probably get the speakers for 230 (maybe even less. ) through my normal contacts.

Daaamn... reply to one, then another appears!

Wombat, I wouldn't expect them to be better than my headphones. I just want the best imaging and SQ I can get for my budget that I can get locally. I wish I could get a HT setup, or one of the higher end setups from Videologic, Midiland, etc. Don't like being on a student budget (need to save up for some desktop publishing courses I want to take).

All I need to make a decision is to find a demo of the 641's and the Monsoon speakers. I already know the 560's quite well. I'll keep you guys posted on what I get. Thx again for the info and opinions.

                                $126 for the Altec Lansings:
