  • Parallel port change causes XP to crash

Tying to install an old AGFA Snapscan 1212P on a mates XP system (XP2000+, 512MB, 825LMR mobo, XP Pro).

Official XP drivers aren't available, but there are beta drivers that have been made to work. The problem is that the parallel port is set to ECP and this scanner is most likely to work as EPP. The scanner is not found when in ECP mode.

Whenever I change the BIOS to something else I get a BSOD and reboot during login (just before choosing an account). Unfortunately the screen is garbled and too quick to see anything useful.

I've tried removing the port in safe mode, disabling in bios and rebooting but I always get the same problem.
bios is set to use ACPI and 'plug and play aware OS'.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    what chipset?

You could try uninstallling the driver, change to epp mode then install the driver.

      Question-

are you trying to run a printer off the port as well?

You might want to try this (though you may have already)...

return the port to normal (ECP) and boot.

      Uninstall your Beta drivers

      remove the port.

      shutdown

      restart

      pop into bios

      change port

      (check your DMA etc)

'update ESCD' or some such, save and reboot.

you might be able to proceed from there.....

      best of luck

@marshmm: I think it is KT400 (from memory) although the manual says KT266.

@Redred: Thats pretty much the procedure I was trying to follow, except that I couldn't find anything for resetting the ESCD. Perhaps resetting the CMOS jumper is in order?

yes, there is a printer attached and that worked ok, although research this morning suggested removing the printer; Hmm, I have a spare parallel port on a PCI card somewhere...

        Thanks

          Tony

I noticed a few wobblies thrown when HP or Canon printers were plugged into the parrallel port with a scanner....

I am afraid, but something tells me that even uninstalling the driver isnt enough....

If its a HP, try changeing the driver to a PCL/5 driver (a laserjet III), from the OS disks (not any download)....

the ESCD is usually a bios option (in most PC's), I cant remember what it stands for, but it is like some sort of map of the PNP devices to IRQ/DMA settings.... when you jigger with it, you can find that the bios remaps your DMA settings....

I havent seen a MOBO without it (though the last one I played with was a Nforce 1), Perhaps the KT400 does this automatically upon a cold reboot.....

Thanks Redred. I've never not seen ESCD in a bios before either! Its a KT266 chipset btw (been checking). The printer is a cannon inkjet.

I have a feeling this might end up with a re-install with the port already set to EPP, but I really don't want to do that. Another hour of fiddling then he gets sent to PC World

            Cheers
