Well the problem here is that you're letting Win98SE use ACPI, which it is patently incapable of using in any sort of reasonable manner.
I'd fix that.

I'm doing some work in another department which uses MACs. On the naive assumption Word would be compatible across platforms, I took a floppy disk with a grant proposal I was working on along with me to put some time in on it.

So I've just bought a USB 64Mb key to get around the problem
