Well the problem here is that you're letting Win98SE use ACPI, which it is patently incapable of using in any sort of reasonable manner.

    I'd fix that.

      I completely agree
But while things are working I'll let sleeping dogs lie until the next upgrade. Is XP the way to go ? (at the risk of starting a flame fest)

There are some infadels that would suggest 2000 is the way to go .... but ignore them and use XP

            Tell me about it :-)
I'm doing some work in another department which uses MACs. On the naive assumption Word would be compatible across platforms, I took a floppy disk with a grant proposal I was working on along with me to put some time in on it.

Eerh, where's the floppy drive then

            They're using IMacs...

So I've just bought a USB 64Mb key to get around the problem

Or he has something that don't play nice
Like the POS Audigy I got (don't get me wrong, it works perfectly in w2k and XP)

If your MB supports APIC you can also get an IRQ list in 2k or XP that looks like this...

                      IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
                      IRQ 10 Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM SMBus Controller - 2443 OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 16 RADEON 8500 SERIES OK
IRQ 18 Creative SB Live! Value OK
                      IRQ 19 Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442 OK
IRQ 20 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 22 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX) OK
                      IRQ 23 Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444 OK
