What audio compression yre you using ?

I was just wondering what everybody's preference is when compressing audio ?

Please provide as much details as possible, such as compression application and parameters, compression ratio would be an interesting bonus information as well.

uhm, right ... maybe I should post my prefs as well ...

I use Easy CDDA's built in LAME 3.93.1 MP3 encoder and have it set to highest quality encoding, no high or low pass filtering, full stereo encoding and VBR 0 (highest quality).

IF i will encode in the future, I'll likely use Ogg Vorbis VBR ~256kb (Ogg has quality settings that only loosely translate to kb/sec).

Oh, and EAC, if it works.

I'm tone deaf so mp3 on whatever defaults has been fine for me using a little proggie called "audio converter"

MP3Pro is different to MP3 with any settings. Think of it like WM8 and WM9.

I've got a Riovolt and an MPIO DMK, both of which can only play MP3. The few MP3 CDs I've made are done with LAME at 160kbps CBR. CBR because I wanted to be sure that they were playable by *anything*, and 160kbps because that's the rate at which all my Smashing Pumpkins stuff would fit onto a single CD If I went back and did it all again, I'd probably use VBR.

I've used Vorbis to share some tracks with a few people (picking some covers to play at a show sometime) to save on bandwidth - it's amazing how good they sound at quality -1, or about 48kbps! If I can replace my Riovolt and DMK with equivalent Ogg-capable devices, I'll switch to Vorbis and never look back.

I use OGG for ripping all of my own (or my friends) CD's. Min 192, nominal 256, max 320. I'm not real sure why I do it that way rather than using the quality options, force of habit I guess.

If I really want to preserve something as a truly high quality rip then I use Monkey's Audio, it seems to be the best out of the lossless codecs as far as compression time/compression ratio goes.

Most of the time I just rip OGG though, although most of the stuff I, err, aquire, elsewhere is MP3 of course. And of course my shoutcast stream ripper records as MP3's cause thats whats being sent out. (check out RipCast if anyone uses shoutcast and is interested in recording the streams).

I tend to use DBPoweramp to encode into OGG. OGG sounds better than MP3 and MP3Pro to me. WMA8 or 9 sounds very similar to OGG but the inability/difficulty to run on other platforms makes it avoidable.

BTW, I remember that LAME 3.93 was considered worse quality-wise than 3.92. Does anyone know if this is fixed in 3.93.1?

MP3, because Julie has an MP3 player and I have to maintain compatibility.

PLUS, I'd need a MUCH nicer sound card AND speakers (than my Audigy eX and Altec ADA880's) in order to hear any difference any of the other formats would make.
