ATRAC3 on my minidisc player. Anyone thinking of getting a portable MP3 player should seriously look at one of Sonys Net minidisc players instead. I can get 3 CDs per disc in high LP2 mode or 6 in LP4.

For compatibility, I only use MP3. I use CDEX, VBR, joint stereo, 128-320kbps, q0. Seems to work fine on everything I've thrown at it, and it sounds damn good on my B&W speakers.Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox

I always use 1:1 (i.e. no long play).
It surely is better than all my VBR mp3s! (or is it because of my audio setup?)P4 Northwood 1.8GHz@2.7GHz 1.65V Albatron PX845PEV Pro

I use MP3 for compatibility reasons as well. I use EAC with LAME 3.92 and --alt-preset standard. It sounds good enough for background listening on my PC. The stereo gets the original CDs; MP3s don't go near it
As for MD, I think standard ATRAC is 292kbps; this is supposed to sound very good. I've heard most people say that the LP modes don't sound anywhere near as good as standard ATRAC.

Except for some few special tracks I'd say it's VERY hard to really tell the difference between the original and a mp3 done with VBR min 128Kbps, max 256KBps - even though I have the computer connected to my Hifi.
I can hear the artifacts from the MD (I don't use it much anymore).

Not sure if my leg is being pulled or not right now. Let me say this, it sound as good, really as good, as a CD. Whether that is good or not I won't say.Join MURCs Distributed Computing effort for Rosetta@Home and help fight Alzheimers, Cancer, Mad Cow disease and rising oil prices.
