What in ****'s name are you using OE for?
    laziness

P.S. There's a quick and simple registry key to disable it from running with OE.
Care to share that wisdom ?

I would stick with the disable method.

I'm with Gurm on this one, its an evil little bugger, just tell it to go to sleep...poking it with a stick will just get it destroying your installation...

Fine, you make me go look it up... sheesh!

        HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a DWORD, call it "Hide Messenger" (without the quotes), and set it to 2.

        Viola!

Don't forget to also go to Tools->Options->General and uncheck "automatically log onto messenger", otherwise it'll sit there confused for a minute when you load it up (OE, that is).

If you wanna be thorough, you can disable the DCOM association between OE and Messenger, that gives you even more speed:

        Run a regedit search for:

        {FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541}

Under there, kill the default values of InProcServer32 and LocalServer32 - that should help immensely.

            Ok, how hard is this?

            1. Install Windows XP.
            2. Install as many damn service packs or whatever as you want.
            3. Fire up Messenger. Yeah, run it yourself.
            4. Go to its properties, under Tools->Options->Preferences.
            5. Uncheck "Run this program when Windows Starts".
            6. Uncheck "Allow this program to run in the background".
            7. Close the program. It will NEVER COME UP AGAIN, unless you run OE. What in ****'s name are you using OE for?

Laziness is correct. I wouldn't consider (for a second) using OE for USENET. That would be nuts. I've messed with God knows how many USENET clients, but OE as an e-mail client is just too easy.
