There's a rumor going that M$ will release DX 9.1 which will boost pixel shader 2.0 performance by 60% on FX cards and will allow nVidia to also work on the quality level.
The competition starts again and with XGI Volari cards around the corner it should get interesting.

I had the VPU recover kick in the other day. Kind of suprised me. Atleast I didn't have to reboot.

Is it going to boost the performance of FX cards or generally decrease the performance of all the other ones?

This is as much an totally unproven rumor as the one stating the nVidia will be left out of the DX10 development.

There's a lot of BS written, but if nVidia can't even manage a 60% increase having their drivers completely taking over the applications shader code and replacing it by their own, specifically designed for that specific game AND with many corners cut, I really don't see how a new DX version would be able to provide a general speed-boost of this magnitude for generic DX9-code AND still getting full-quality...

So: don't believe everything that's written by some freak on the net.

My bad, put "by" instead of "up to" and you're toast.
A rumor is a rumor, implies uncertainty by definition, I'm never certain about anything or blindly believe everything , even the rumor guys expressed uncertainty.
A percentage that seems confusing and amazing but that we can't verify before it is released.
The only thing that it's supposed to do is to also take in account nVidia's shader specs.
Pardon my ignorance, but can they do that, make use of both ATI's specs (standard) and nVidia's ?

why not? DX is a HAL after all. So you write for DX and it works on all hardware. It's up to MS to make sure the DX instructions are properly translated for the target hardware. It's easier for MS programmers if all hardware uses some sort of standard, otherwise it's just more work.
