Thanks Tech. It's the relatively high-pitched spindle spinning type noise. Not hugely loud; just bothers me...

Nice find DM, I'll have a look there now... what rig do you have, and what did it cost to make it silent? (if you don't mind me asking )

Well it's kind of bits and bobs. PSU I got a seasonic super tornado for about 40 quid (but needed one anyway)... then this watercooling kit 140 quid... in a dodgy old case that I don't mind messing with so might stick some foam to soon.

All this on an Athlon 2000+ which now runs happily cool at 1800MHz (stock is 1667) although I haven't even tried it higher yet. Plus Parhelia, a coupla HDDs (one 5400 which is quiet, and a noisy 7200), and a DVD and a CDRW both of which don't make noise when their empty.

By the way I do have a secondary system of a duron 1200 with onboard graphics - with the same seasonic PSU and a cheapo coolermaster 80mmHSF it really is v. v. v. v. v. v. quiet indeed - but then there is almost bugger all else in the case apart from a 5400 HDD and a CR-ROM drive. No PCI or AGP cards at all so no other fans apart from the CPU one and the big one in the PSU.

Oh and the addition of a voltage switch for the fans or a device like the Zalman FanMate is a great help if you want to leave a machine on say overnight but want it at full wack during the day.
