Hmm.. could steal Paddy's internet bandwidth by clipping the cable, terminating both ends, adding a small switch, and running a cable to the house next door..

That's not evil - it's all a part of his plan, at £15/month to each of his 4 nearest neighbours

Cat5e can do gigabit fine as long as the distances are under 100 feet, from what I've been told anyways. I'm redoing some of my network (going gigabit) this summer and I'm going to stick with 5e; so it better work
3com has decent prices on 8 port gigabit switches: http://3com.links.origin.channelinte...sSKU=3C1670800

So if I am going to run cable around the house to a few rooms.... should I have the foresight to inlude more than a network cable?

Beware of running multiple parallel cables unless you are confident of good shielding!

                  Yes.

If it's not already there, then you should run TV cable (coaxial here, not sure what teh standard would be there), and phone cables as well (cat3 is required, you could use CAT5 (5e, 6, 6e, 7 - whatever) as well).

Don't worry about running multiple low voltage lines alongside each other - that's how it's done. Just be careful of putting the signal cables parallel with or close to mains wiring.

If you're very industrious, you should think about using conduit. For each room, 3/4 inch conduit is good - it allows several wires (most of which are about 1/4 inch) in the same conduit. (I don't know the standard metric sizes, or if they're sold in inches in the UK) This is a major pain in the ass though - it's pretty difficult to run conduit through existing walls (much drilling ensues )

You might also try pulling a strong cord along with the wire. Then, when you want to add the next big thing, just attach it to the cord and pull (along with a replacement cord).

                  - Steve

You might consider just going ahead and putting up some conduit.

At least run a couple CAT6 cables though. They're good for data, phone, other stuff....

CAT6 really shouldn't be that much more money.

                        Cool.

A mate of mine did the first fit of electrics in this house.
I'll have a chat with him as he may know how to run the cables through the wall cavity with minimum destruction...

Well the thing is, we already have cat5e in the entire house from a few years ago, so while cat6 isnt that much more than cat5e, its a lot more than the $0 we would spend keeping our old stuff We're just gonna get a new switch, new NICs for two of the compys and a new patch panel dealy.
Gettin' cat6 would probably cost us at least 100 bones to redo everything.

                              no more tripping on cables

itd be like the basement ceilings with the panel dealys (you guys know what im talking about) but on the floor, thatd be so nice.

man i feel like a nerd... but I may as well be a nerd that doesnt trip on cables

I wish we had a basement so that we could simply run the cables and server underground.
