Which modem do you connect to the Linksys BEFSX41?
People genarally complain about connection loss, no MSN Messenger compatibility, problems wit BitTorrent with different routers.

My son-in-law has a Zyxcel modem (no router) and he almost never has a connection loss.
I assume the most issues lie in the routers, not in the DSL modems. And, the best buy is a modem + router in separate units.
So, again: which DSL modem are you using?
I do not have any DSL experience.

My BEFSF41 works great. It was okay when I got it, but a firmware upgrade fixed my problems.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

          @Wombat

          BEFSF41 ??? Couldn't find iton the Internet.

          @Technoid

Nice to know about the Alcatel SpeedTouch-Home. Tele2 suplies this one for new ADSL customers. I suppose the other Alcatel products are the same qual. I am looking for their 510v4 modem+4x router (all in one).
The Tele2 is another question. My phone line/cellphone are Tele2 but I am more and more doubtful, you know...

Strange, I don't see it listed on Linksys's site anymore, either. The SF41 is basically the SR41 with a special firewalling firmware that lets me configure some more stuff.

The ONE time I've experienced connection problems it was the Toshiba cable modem that was crapping out.

Once the Toshiba was replaced with a SurfBoard SB-3100 everything went back to smooth city and stayed that way until I went DSL. With it I'm using an Efficient Networks (Siemens) SpeedStream 5100 and have zero trouble.

Another nix for Toshiba. I had one of their cable modems. Had it replaced twice in the first 90 days.

yeah, my alcatel speedtouch home was good..up until the lightning strike...

Well a mate has given me his webexcel 3808 which he screwed the firmware up on...I think I can resurrect it....so I may have a VERY cheap option..maybe

The FCC limits them to about 19 mw output when shipped, but the hack lets you go much higher. If you opt to put in heat sinks you can go up to about 84+ mw, but going this high may sacrifice stability. Most people are staying at or below 64 mw. To be safe most are staying between 48 mw and 56 mw.

The ping hack is done as follows:

                    1. Go to the System tab of the router config
                    2. Hit the "PING Test" button.
                    3. Anything that is included in the "IP Address or Domain Name" box will be executed once you hit PING

The PING command is '/usr/sbin/wl -i eth2 txpwr [level]' (single quotes included).

Ex: send the string '/usr/sbin/wl -i eth2 txpwr 48' to set an output level of 48 mw.

Looking for a way to do this on new firmware, I found a much nicer option

Download WIFI-BOX - WRT54G(s) GPL Firmware for free. WIFI-BOX Firmware for WRT54G(s), Hacked with Linksys's GPL source code, Add more futures for this Wireless Router... Updated: Now support for GS version and Asus WL-500GS...

the GPL hack of the firmware, which includes a drop down box for TX power

my friends old webexcel 3808 has sprang back into life...so will put off buying new equipement unless my router has problems.

Mind you the linksys opensource thingy is very fecking tempting..

aah krap....it looks like the wan port on the dsl router is fecked

The wan light will not light up when I connect it to the 3803.

Can someone confirm that in order to connect the 3803 (modem/router) to my dsl router I should put it in bridge mode and connect the modem to the dsl router wan port....because it don't work (bridge or no bridge)

so it looks like its a toss up between

                        dlink 504g (3 year warrentee)
                        netgear dg834(1 year warentee)\
                        netcom 1300+4 (3year)

(equiv linksys is twice the price with only 1year warranty)

Nope, they've made it up. Googling for it comes up with only that link that you show.

                              Maybe a BEFDSR41W?

edit: its a linksys AG041 ..very basic model

must be a great model if linksys won't even put it on their site

Maybe it is the modem. Resetting the modem is what gets the connection going again. It's a Speedstream 5260. My friends says Earthlink Tech Support says resetting the modem fixes "99% of the problems" with this router. Perhaps it just doesn't react well to some modems.
