  • Installing bluetooth dongle WITHOUT Admin rights on Win2k SP4

I'm at work and would quite like to install by bluetooth USB dongle. Only problem is, I haven't got Admin rights on this machine. I've got what my company calls "developer rights" so my machine is an awful lot less locked down than others (eg I can install most software without problems). But the driver disk that came with my dongle refuses to install claiming I need Administrator Rights. Same for all possible files - those called "setup.exe" "inst.exe" or "BTW.msi" all ask for Admin rights.

I can plug the dongle in and let Windows find the driver on the CD, and it installs a driver that appears in Device Manager as "CSR USB Bluetooth Device", Manufacturer WIDCOMM and version 1.4.2.8.

But then I don't have an icon in the taskbar, and can't seem to be able to find any way at all to make it connect to my phone (search for bluetooth devices etc).

    Any ideas?

Am using Win2k SP4, and have float's Mobile Agent installed and ready to go if only I could get my computer to talk to the phone!

    TIA

There was some kind of registration details needed i.e. going to a website giving the nac address of the dongle and gettign a key back to enable the bluetooth device.

Bluetooth Software version 1.4.2.10 will check the license of the hardware. Hence, if you intend to update the software from earlier versions (such as v1.3.x), you must ,in the first place, obtain a license key (security code) from WIDCOMMÄ„Åšs website (http://66.45.42.85/msi).

Hmmm doesn't seem to be anything like that... the dongle I have is a fairly generic "SafeCom" class I one. But I'll give that a try

      edit:

According to the BD address, your device is not from MSI. Please kindly double confirm and retry it. If you still have any other question, please e-mail support@msi.com.tw with title "Bluetooth Security" for further assistance.
so that looks like a msi-specific thing maybe?

Euhm, if you can install the drivers, isn't there an new entry in the control panel? (in this you should be able to enable the system tray icon)

Also, it could be that you dongle works both with widcomm and MS drivers (mine does). In that case, it might be possible to install the MS drivers...?

VJ - no such option I think it's just installing a bare driver with no control panel etc.

BUT: a bit of searching and I found some 1.4.2.10 drivers that don't appear to check for admin rights. They installed OK so I've got the icons now, but when it comes to clicking on the taskbar icon, it says
Your Bluetooth Software license does not include use with this Bluetooth device. [6]"
and then asks me for a licence.dat file. I have tried pointing it to both the one from the CD and also the one from the download, but nothing happens. I guess this is that Widcomm thing where they restrict use of the drivers to specific vendor IDs?

Oh well, still trying to work it out...

EDIT: oh, and even after the 1.4.2.10 package was installed the driver version in Device Manager is still 1.4.2.8... hmmmm. Keen on avoiding too many reboots as it takes an age at work (loads of network stuff)

OK. I've got it working. In the process I think I've broken just about all the IT security guidelines my company has Oh well.

Anyway. I uninstalled whatever I had before, and found and installed the v4 drivers. Also some, erm, "patches". Then went into safe mode (which isn't supposed to be possible here as we have smart cards to log on, and drivers for them aren't loaded in safe mode, but I just happen to know a way around that from testing of the desktop environment I helped with about 3 years ago, in combination with settings my Citrix connection uses from home ), did my stuff, and rebooted. Et voila, I'm sorted...
