EDIT: Ahem. I am in the wrong thread... so the answer doesn't really make sense I thought we were in the "google discriminates against opera" thread

Well, you're arguing beside the point (as is sasq) - this thread is about a site (a webApp, no less) that worked perfectly (in Opera 8 betas, not yet in Opera 7) and google without any reason suddenly changed gmail so that it wouldn't work properly in Opera anymore without tricks (and they knew gmail worked in the Opera 8 betas, both Opera Software and users had told them). I really see no fault at Opera here.

      Nope, sorry I am not.
      key word here BETA
It's not gold yet, and again I say, No sane developer is going to code detection for a browser that changes its functionality every 5 mins. particulary one with such a low market share.

Who's fault is that, dunno, ask the Opera dev's why only just now in beta 8 you can do things IE and Moz has done for years.

This subject is rather pointless anymore (or rather, what the subject has become muddied into). IE is and will be, as long as Windows is the predominant OS, the market holding browser.

IE is about 3 generations behind on W3C standards as it doesn't fully implement (or doesn't do so correctly) specs that have long since been in effect. Standard specs that Microsoft coincidentally helped create. IE7 might help ratify this, and it might create more problems. Based on the comments from the developers I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Opera is a great browser for those who like the power it offers, but even as someone who wants to be a fan again, it has some issues that it shouldn't after all these years. I know that there are some checks in the vb code that check for Opera, lots of them in fact. Do I have time to track them all down and tell you what they are doing? No. So honestly I can't say what all Opera users see and don't see. I'm on a Mac anyhow, and the Mac version of Opera isn't worth the price of admission (a non-issue as it relates to this subject).

None of the browsers or rendering engines are perfect and each one appeals to a different user. It's really as simple as that. Comparing browsers to each other on anything more than a rendering level is like comparing a honey oak stain to a mahogany stain.

Just for the record though, I use OmniWeb and FF. When I was on Windows I initially preferred Opera (as is obvious by posts I made in previous years).

Sorry for diverging so far from the topic

          Very nice post JW.

BTW, may I ask what's bad about Opera on mac? I was under the impression that since 7.5, Opera/Mac is essentially the same as Opera/Win and Opera/Unix.

It's clunky in how it draws/paints the interface. Not a big gripe on the scale of things, but it does become an issue when trying to use it as anything but a browser to test pages in. There are some other smaller things, but for the most part it just feels wrong.

There's also the whole thing about my key still not working in the latest Mac builds...
