I bought an X2 recently (had a thread here a couple of weeks ago) but I've been busy so I haven't even had time to open it up yet. From everything I've read though. X2s don't consume much more power than a single core A64 and still less than Intel's offerings.

X2 are a great idea, but they still are too expensive for what they offer. There´s still not much software out there to really use the 2nd core. They are a great upgrade path for socket 939 within a year or so, when they´ll become much cheaper.

Maybe because of the lower voltage, they are rated the same wattage as a venice core running the same speed - around 89W for the 3800+, if I´m correct. They appear to be very overclockable, also - some people with a Dual-Sata2 managed to overclock the cores to 2500Mhz with only 0,05v increase.

Definitly AMD still has the upper hand...

But they cost about the same as two regular A64 of the same clockspeed...at least here. Fair deal IMHO.

I´ll prefer them when they cost the same as a regular A64 costs now
As a rule of thumb, I learned all these years that it hardly pays to give more than 150€ for a CPU The second cheaper mainstream CPU is usually the wise choise.

Hmm...than either prices here are really screwed, or you can only get slowest possible to find in shops Athlon64, and only OEM at that. (looking only at S939)

That said, if I'd have to upgrade soon (unlikelly) it would probably be Sempron...

I got here a Venice 3200+ OEM for 146€, taxes included. It´s running just fine at 2450Mhz@245 HTT, that should be something between a 3800+ and a 4000+. Not bad for a sub-150€ CPU and a budget 70€ board

My previous CPU, a Athlon XP 2600+ thunderbird also costed around 150€ 2,5 years ago, and it certainly did its job @ 2200Mhz.

And of course, the king of kings of 150€ CPU´s of all times: the mighty Celeron 300A@450Mhz on a Abit BX6

I usually wait for these good deals to show up. That´s why this motherboard is just so adequate.

Hmmm...when I look into the past it turns out that in my case I usually wait till CPU/mobo burns (as it was with Duron600/MSI K7T Pro) or when I'm much too fed up with what I have (as it was with K7T Turbo2) because it doesn't work as it should...
