  • Paddy's hardware restructuring thread!

Right. As the saying goes, I’ve got good news and bad news.
The good news is that I’m going to be a father! My wife, Andrea, is six weeks pregnant. We were going to hold off announcing it until the first scan as it is still very early days. However, Andrea was rushed into hospital last week by an over enthusiastic GP who queried an ectopic pregnancy. Hormone and ultrasound scan suggests all is well, so we’ve decided it was a good a time as any to tell everyone.

The bad news is that I’ve got to make some substantial lifestyle changes.
One of which is the eventual conversion of the office to a nursery. I’d rather loose the spare bedroom, but I’ve quickly learned never to argue with hormonally driven women! . So, in order to empty the office I need to reassess my computing needs.

My current setup is as follows:
    • 8 ethernet ports hardwired with cat 5 around the house. I have another eight ports to add, which will fill the switch, but that is fairly low down on the list of priorities and will probably be done on a room-by-room basis as we redecorate.
    • 16 port 100mbit ethernet switch, with one gigabit port located in the garage
    • 4 port ADSL modem router patched through to the switch
    • Compaq ProLiant 6500: Dual PII 400Mhz with 1GB RAM. 2x18.2GB SCSI RAID 1 array with 250GB ATA storage (expandable to 4x250GB in RAID 5 array) – this needs rebuilding as soon as I can sort out the SCSI controller. I also have 3x9.6GB SCSI drives but as they are fairly useless I intend to sell them on ebay.
    • Modified XBOX which streams music/video/pictures/internet from networked drive. The XBOX acts as a console/AV machine. It gets data from the 250GB drive which is currently in my PC, but will move to the server when it is built.
    • My PC: XP 3200+, Asus A7N8X-e, 2x512MB DDR, AIW 9800 (softmodded to Pro speeds), 120 GB SATA (WD 1200JD), Plextor 1210S CDRW, Pioneer 106 DVD, Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller, Sony CPD-G400 monitor, MX 700 mouse etc, Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 digital 5.1, Lian-Li PC75 Full tower case…

The server, switch, modem patch panel are in the garage. The XBOX is under the TV and the PC is in the office.

In order to empty the office I need to relocate the computer. Now realistically, I don’t have anywhere to put it . So, what I would like is to use the server as a mail/ftp/http/AV/bittorrent server – always on. I would then need a second device to use on an adhoc basis.

Requirements are modest and include preparing presentations, browsing the internet/email, archive manipulation and perhaps some multimedia use for trips. I don’t expect to be able to afford anything ‘state-of-the-art’, and I certainly don’t think I’ll be able to afford anything capable of playing games like HL2 – although that would be nice. In essence, I am prepared to compromise the ability to play games on my PC as long as I get something that is portable (and pretty) enough to make it worthwhile. I don’t want to feel that I have made a step backwards – so normal operation MUST be at least as fast as what I have now. I have seen several pics in the lounge of people using their TV as a monitor. It would be very useful to be able to connect the laptop to the TV/Speakers, although not essential. I would need onboard NIC, SD reader and +/- WIFI if possible. Oh, and it must be quiet as possible!

In order to finance this, I am prepared to sell my old computer and all it’s parts, including the CPD-G400 (which is a lovely monitor). I could be persuaded to sell the server instead, but I doubt that it would raise anywhere near the same amount of capital.

So, my questions are as follows:
    • Realistically, what price range for a laptop am I looking at?
    • Realistically, can I raise enough capital selling my old computer to purchase a laptop.
    • Would I be better selling the computer as a package on ebay, or stripping it and pimping the parts individually?
    • Do I need a funky (ie, HDTV) TV in order to connect the laptop to it AND be able to use it as a PC monitor. I have a fairly standard 21” Sony Trinitron 60Hz with various inputs including SCART, S-Video, SPDIFF (the circular multi pin thingie) etc…
    • What brands should I consider/avoid?
    • Buy new/second hand/refurbished?
    • Any other tips/suggestions?

    Cheers guys!
I am off work for 3 ½ weeks after my hernia op, so I would like to get this all sorted before I go back, as I can get by without a computer at present. Otherwise I will be forced to buy a laptop on credit card, and then sell the computer retrospectively.

Well, most laptops can be connected to S-video or composite. But the quality isn't good enough to use as a monitor for anything else but watching films. Most LCDs TVs have SVGA inputs, which does improve on things, but personally, I don't think it is comfortable to use...

    What brands should I consider/avoid?
good: Dell, HP (depending on the range), IBM, Toshiba, Fujitsu (no personal experience)
soso: Acer (wears fast when carried frequently)

Not much info, but I hope it helps...

      Spitting image of you, Paddy.

I remember the advice our GP gave me when Margaret became preggers 45 years ago. It's YOUR job to feed the baby for the next 7½ months: do it at least twice per week. After that, leave it to her as she is better equipped for it after it is born.

      Félicitations.

        Congratulations

.. I guess you should be looking at a bigger house now, or maybe set up the computer in the spare bedroom.. if you use a flat panel monitor with it, it should not take up too much space in there
(Why is it that women wants to keep the barely used spare bedroom, but thinks the office, which is used daily is the one to go?.. my girlfriend is thinking along the same lines )

Congrats to you and Andrea! I suggest you name the baby 'Zokes' or 'Denis', you know, after your fav MURCer, hehe.

If your low on space a nice laptop liek Fat Tone would be sufficient. Sup to you though.

Keep the server in the Garage as a Nursery heater

Seriously dude, even a 'desktop replacement' laptop isn't. Get yourself a small computer desk for the spare bedroom and a 19" TFT.

              Thanks Guys!

yeah I know that there is no such thing as a desktop replacement. Well, unless you are prepared to spend thousands... I don't mind making this sacrifice, and between the XBOX and the server I probably wont be missing out on much. I can't remember the last time I played a game on my PC... It probably was HL2. I tend to play games through once and then leave them forever - the only exception being CounterStrike...

If i abstain from gaming on the PC, and stick to the XBOX, then I guess my PC needs are very modest.

I guess the other way I can play this is to build a HTPC like machine, but with a beefy spec... size is the important factor here, but I think that would cost far too much. If I do get a laptop, I wont be using an external monitor. I'll keep my old keyboard/mouse combo as laptop one's are not the nicest for any serious work.

Nope. I am prepared to abandon the PC games arena. I think a laptop would be a good compromise between maintaining functionality, portability and size.

Any ideas on cost, or suggesions on specific makes/models.
I do like your Acer Tony, but I have heard lots of horror stories with longegivity and reliability.

Any thoughts on what I'd get for the PC?

Well if you won't be persuaded...

My new HTPC cost me ~£650, £170 of which was a black Silverstone Lascala LC11M-B case, which looks very nice indeed under the telly. Another £85 of that was for an XPMCE license which you could avoid.

My Ferarri has been reliable (apart from Luke killing the mobo when he tested it's impact rating). Just recently had a new battery, and I'm getting over 2.5hrs armchair wifi browsing now.

A couple of friends have had the £500 Acer Travelmate (2304 I think) from E-Buyer. One is perfect, the other won't maintain a wifi connection so is going back. Having said that, you get a lot of spec for the money, but I wouldn't want to ship it around a lot as build quality is not up to Ferarri's standards.

Case link: http://www.silverstonetek.com/products-lc11m.htm - but this one http://www.silverstonetek.com/products-lc11.htm shows the construction.

                  Any thoughts on laptop hardware?
AMD vs Intel? Which CPUs to avoid as they put out too much heat etc?
                  Mobile graphics?

I like it. It's enough for gaming, not serious gaming but gaming none the less. It would defenitely be one of my choices.

All depends on what you plan to do with it though.

I was seriously considering one of those when they were on the specials page at NewEgg. Although a laptop is easy to "put away", they actually take a fair amount of desk space. Especially when you plug in an external keyboard and mouse, because the built-in ones are useless.

You may want to get one of the sff PCs and an LCD monitor. Something like this or this (or even this). Those will be very small, fairly quiet, and just as powerful, though not as expandable, as a normal desktop.

I'm hoping that if i stick to my XBOX for gaming, my server for streaming, then I only NEED a pc for the Office Suite. As they are non-unpgradable, it makes sense to get the best machine i can afford. Yeah I know that all the extra bit's 'n bobs take up space, but they are OPTIONAL extras, and lets face it, they wont take up as much space as a LCD/speaker/Kb/mouse/SFF combo.

What do you think of the 'AMD Turion ML37 Processor 2.0GHz and ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCI-E 128MB' combo?

I can't help but feel that if i loose the 'Ferrari' logo I'll save hundreds of £££'s.
Can anyone else suggest a high-end spec laptop for around £1K (or under )

From some of the benchmarks and reviews I've read on that particular CPU and GPU combo, it seems to perform very well. Doom 3 at 1024x768 32bit gets about 25fps 4x AA 8x AF, 3DMark2005 gets about 3000 (1024x768 32bit). Unreal Tournament 2004 runs like a dream, over 60fps at full quality. These results are from a Acer Ferrari but with an 1,8GHz Turion ML34 with a Radeon X700 128mb.

                              I got those results here.

I'd say it's a very decent machine. If I had the money, it would be mine! Muahahaha!
