  • Anyone with Windows 2003?

I'm somehow planning move from XP to 2003...but one thing kept me away - no fast user switching (it's a must for me...).
I was searching if perhaps enabling it is possible...and have found this on Neowin forums:

Actually both Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching are still there "hidden" in Windows Server 2003. I got them unlocked by an easy way. You need Windows Server 2003 "converted" to Windows XP Professional 2003 by ntswitch Insall StyleXP and don't worry about it saying: Cannot enable under this build Go to Logons and simply turn on Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching. You are done!
Anyone curious enough to check if its true? I'd like to know if its true before I'll wipe mine current OS...

Why do you need 2K3? In my office, I have it on about 5 servers. Users do not log into those machines for their day-to-day work.
    P.S. You've been Spanked!

It's in the style of Windows 2000. And I like that style much more then the one of XP...
Besides probably more secure, stable and perhaps even a bit faster...

edit: W8, have you just said that you can check it, if it works, on one of your servers?

just change the skin in xp to be classic aka 2k. problem solved.

There's really no good reason to run Server 2003 as a desktop OS. I'm sure it's possible, but it's a hack and it will probably ruin any speed or stability advantage there may have been.

I'd just do a clean reinstall of XP, turn off all the eye candy, and call it a day.

Sasq, I'm not talking about skin of course. (but yes, I've always used classic view in XP)
It's a style of "everything on" vs. "everything off".

agallag: I know few people (just cen't get in touch with them right now, so no way to check the whole thing) who run it as desktop. Very, very positive impressions. (it's not a hack, you just change few standard settings)

google for viper windows tweaking, and you'll be able to see cached copies of the old site and services to keep/kill....

Ahhh...you seem to be supplying me with a link that describes how to make XP more like 2003...so why not just install 2003, do one step above plus installing graphic drivers/enabling acceleration and be done with it?

OK, I have to make one thing clear: this was not meant to be a thread disciussing why one should or shouldn't use particular system
It's just "does this trick work?" (BTW, if anybody will want to check, perhaps it would be best to do it with registry monitor...because I doubt the change is of any other caliber)

Well, yeah - but in his guide (or something...I can, hardly, but still, understand describing most of basic things in such guides, but why somebody would describe installation of windows itself is beyond me...) the issue wasn't adressed at all (archive.org...)

I run 2k3 as a server, and it is doing just that, very nicely.

I ain't hacking it for nobody

Only problem I've had with it was a bunch of security updates about 3-4 months back fubarred ZA. That's gone now and all is fine.

Well, if you have VM Ware, you could try the trial version of Windows Server 2003:

That way, you could experiment all you want...

(we are currently running the 64-bit trial on a server intended for database use, but I'm not hacking it )
