High idle cpu usage with AMD64

Just got myself a brand new rig.
Epox nforce 3 motherboard
AMD64 3500+
1.5gb ram

and when i idle in windows cpu usage is like 60-80% would someone care to explain this to me?

The system seems a bit too laggy for such an expensive system too.
seems like some windows bug or mem hole.

Im running WINXP SP2 32Bit edition

What i have done.

Installed nforce drivers 5.10 (again)
Installed AMD Cpu Drivers

I take it you have all the motherboard drivers, and have you installed the amd processor driver as well.?

When you run the taskmanger what process is at the top of the list when click the CPU heading?

Do you have cool and quiet enabled in the bios?

Well i dont see any processes using it but my sysmetrix shows constant cpu usage 70% about.

no i havent installed amd cpu drivers. gotta try that when i get back home.
and im running Windows XP with SP2

in the device manager, check your IDE channels, if one ore more slipped down to PIO transfer mode !!!

I once had that phenomenon and it brought my rig down to a crawl

also, in taskmanager, you could activate "show kernel times" to get a better idea what's going on

I just tried playing Bloodrayne and that was a no go.

I got a message that "Windows reported -1531.8mb of free disk space"
Yes that is MINUS. So i have like less than zero swap space eventhou i just expanded my swap space to 2500-6000mb

i dont get this any more and this is starting to piss me off!

Weird problem.

As I always suggest, have you tested the RAM? Or tried it with less RAM? Maybe there's a module that's buggy or one that just doesn't want to work with your board?

on the other hand, 32bit windows is limited to 4GB RAM incl. your swap file, so maybe that's another reason ...

set it back to min/max 2048MB and try again

just noticed one other quite fun thing. All full screen apps/games either crash or freeze the computer.

Just ran 3DMark03 and got a decent score of 4700
But only 222 in Cpumark.
And that is low. VERY LOW. i checked orb and people are getting like 4.5k + with same cpu.

My AMD64 3000+ is scoring 3404.7 in CPUMark and that's with Firefox, TBird and MSPro 8 running
