Yes, but it's virtually unheard of

Most apps that can take advantage of 2 CPUs should do quite well on a dual dual-core machine. With the exception of Windows. IIRC, Windows XP Pro (or 2000 Pro) are limited to 2 CPUs. I'm not sure if that means two cores or two chips.

Windows XP pro is limted to 2 sockets, so you could have a 4 way system using dual cores.

I think the effectiveness of dual AND quad core systems is going to increase quite a lot over the comming years, Its seem to be the only viable way of increasing CPU power at this time.

It quite interesting that Nvidia and ATI are both claiming their new drivers are good for 10-40 % increase on X2(and dual) systems, somthing they could/should have optimised for years ago.

Programers and OS people have been lauding the need for good multi threaded programming for the last 5-10 years, within a couple months of a dual core being released for the general consumer and home user It suddenly actually is begining to happen.

And don't forget the multi core consoles...no developer (even game) has an excuse to not develop for multi cpu anymore, in fact if you don't you kiss you ass goodbye

            Doesn't the XBOX 360 use a 3 core chip?

it uses a custom 3 core stripped down power pc core. it has less transistors than a P4 Xeon Gallatin w/ 2MB cache and way less than a Athlon64 X2.

                NEW FLASH!!!!!!

In frustration, I called Dell to see how much an AMD system will cost, apperanly to my surprise they are an Intel only shop, I said fine what do you have in terms of Dual Core systems, so they said the Dell Percision 670 supports the DUAL CORE XEONS.

I said WHAT??????? Intel cancelled all plans for Dual Core Xeons, he said if it's on our web site we sell them, and the price is $1,600 for the processor.

Of course this brought a cautious smile to my face as I was extremely specific with my next questions, like what chipset do these CPU's support, he said the E7525, the smile on my face grow wider

I thanked him for all the information, with hopes that HP will also tell me the same thing, I will call them next and report back! So there is hope that I have an upgrade path for my expensive system after all.

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories

                Processor

                New dual-core at 2.8GHz with 2x2MB L2 cache or single-core 64-bit Intel® Xeon® processors up to 3.80GHz with 2MB L2 cache

                pretty interesting eh?

                Cheers!!!!

Interesting? Dunno, I'd seriously ask myself is there any point in buying CPU that was released solely because of marketing purposes...but I don't have to, luckily (? )

                    not so good

well at least it wins some benchmarks, record breaking power consumption

Out of curiosity I looked at this review (intorduction and conclusions only ).
And...they claim that there no old motherboards support these CPUs (even though chipset does) - typical Intel pin-shuffling.
So I'd guess that's not the ned of story for you, Elie...

Yeah, Paxville is not atractive. Dual Core Xeons won't be interesting untill Woodcrest (P-M/banias based in H2 07, you'll most likely need new motherboard again for those ) comes out and even then AMD will probably still be competitive.

Also AMD will shuffle S754 and S939 Athlons to socket M2 and Opterons to socket F arround middle of next year and switcht to DDR2.

If you can hold out with purchase of dual dual core box untill then, it might be worth to see how Woodcrest stacks up against Opterons then.

good call, I think intel will be putting some of its advertsing budget into making a somthing special for its next generation. They should defintely have learnt from there mistakes on the p4.

It will be good to see what they come up with, but for this generation I just had to splurge on dual opteron. The chipset gets hotter than the CPU FFS even using the standard Heatsink

There is a preview of Dempsey dual core Xeons on 2cpu (still P4 based, but on 65nm process) and Bensley platform (will take Dempseys but will also take Woodcrest (P-M/Banias based, Conroe and Merom being desktop and mobile counterpart.

While Paxville was lackluster at 2.8GHz in the gamepc review, the Dempsey @ 3.46 with new memory controller is no slouch.

Note that 246 Opteron in that review runs at 2.0 GHz, there is 254 @2.8 and dual core 280 @2.4GHz and they will rerun benchmarks, when they get CPUs from AMD.

I'll save you the trouble: dual core A64's scream, at least for multimeida/graphics work. VERY stable as well as running VERY cool. The CPU fan speed control on this box has been stuck at the lowest setting since day one.
