I've been using -R/+R/RAM multiformat burners by LG and Lite-On with good results. They'll take generic Office Max and the other generics I've tried in stride and work great with Verbatim etc.
I've seen some great prices at NewEgg; $30-$40 or so.
Right now the "ultimate" burner is probably BenQ. But you're not going to go wrong with NEC or LG, just not as "right".

I've always been a Plextor man myself, but I haven't kept up with burners in a while. LG and NEC have typically been the top choice for a good low cost burner. I know BenQ makes pretty good LCD panels, but I haven't read anything about their burners.
I usually always buy Plextor because they last forever (it took 8 years for my 8x burner to die) and work great. Plus they typically have the nicer features that EAC looks for when ripping audio.
But that's just me, and I hate toasting media or buying a new burner every other year, so I stick with my Plextor.

BenQ occupies the same place that Lite-On did a few years ago, and then Pioneer did. It reads and writes the most media the most reliably... right now.
But NEC has been solid all along, as has LG.
