i didnt know where to post this so i thought this would be just as good as any...

    /brain hurts.

    ok

    new hard drive
    new mother board
    new memory
    new dvd writer
new operating system straight from box
    new power supply even....

    install vista.. doesnt work

reinstall xp, then try to install vista over that.. doesnt work

apparently lots of people are having this problem, my brain at the moment cant absorb all the bs i'm reading in all these tech forums.

    error message:

Windows cannot open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070000D

im pulling the hair out of my head.

are you using an image you downloaded from the internet or a retail box copy?

err, reread that and it makes more sense. general concensus i've seen around is that it's somewhere between the disk, the dvd reader, and the motherboard.

did you check the cable or maybe master/slave settings?

Try loading some JPEG2000 files from here. A randomly picked example is 1021.6 MB, 32019 x 68691.

I'm not saying that it's not possible to CONTRIVE such a file, but a 50MB or 100MB or even 250MB file shouldn't make the machine hang.

What I don't get about Apple is why they don't have any "regular" computers. When my PC decided it needed a new install of XP the other day I checked up on what kind of Macs were available, with the intention of getting one, and was surprised to see that they only have the laptops, the mini Mac, iMacs, and the Mac Pro. Nothing even remotely near the equivalent of my computer without going absurdly over the top with a Mac Pro.

No. I currently run a Core 2 Duo with Vista 32-bit Ultimate edition on my lappy with no (beyond normal Vista...) issues. Current gen mainstream 64-bit processors are completely backwards compatible to 32-bit.

If you've got another system, you might try updating the BIOS on the motherboard. Also, it could be some setting in the BIOS that's causing a problem, like not having APIC turned on (just a guess, don't know if that would really cause a problem with Vista or not.)

Vista uses a very new form of UDF on the DVD, I wonder if that's the issue. Technically it shouldn't but you never know. .WIM (Windows IMaging format) is MSs new disc imaging and OS deployment format. If you are getting a read error on a .WIM file then either the media is bad or your drive is having issues reading UDF ... 3.0 I think.

Anyway, if you or someone you know has a large flash drive there is a hack to install Vista via flash. Instructions are here:

Microsoft California - Public Sector - State & Local Government

Pretty easy to do and straight forward. If you can set this up on a different computer and then install Vista from flash it may circumvent a media issue.

Bit late in to this but as an active member of group 3, both professionally and personally none of my collegues use a Mac, all PC.

Also, on the stability front. what is more stable then my PC which never crashes, a Mac that never crashes and makes the room look prettier?

Oh I know a lot in #3 who use PCs as well - I was one of them for years. Regardless, it's still a large segment of Apple's market. My point however, was that you can't make sweeping generalizations about the target users of Macs or Pcs, because there are so many in whatever groupings you may come up with that use the other platform.

As far as the latter bit... the aesthetic appeal of Mac/Apple hardware is certainly part of the decision in owning, but I use a Mac because of OS X, not because it makes the room look prettier. I wouldn't have bought a Dell widescreen instead of a Apple Cinema display if that was the case.

A Mac that only crashes with VERY SIMPLE ERRORS. Like "Error 4".

I would in fact contemplate running OSX if more of what I needed to do ran on it.
