Yeah, a bit like. We used to run cards from a company that was later acquired by ATi IIRC. One of the best things you could do at the time was set an option that would maximise a program to occupy all screens on which it wass present when you'd click the max button.
e.g. Window on screen 2 only, maximise to screen 2, or
Windown on screens 2 and 3, maximise to screen 2 and 3.
Not what I want but at least better than what I have.

Currently I run a nVidia Quadra NVS 280 PCI and a nVidia GeForce 6600 LE and maximise will ALWAYS max to one screen only. Had the same experience with a Matrox G200 MMS BTW, either over one or all four screens.

What works best?...for sure having two CRT monitors at 1024x768 (one of them was a bit shitty in res. and colours, emiting noise when in sleep mode...left by someone in the kitchen when they moved out) didn't work out that great; having IM clients and Winamp (with uTorrent maximizing there when starting download) on 2nd one was somewhat nice...except the thing that 1024x768 wasn't enough to avoid menaging open windows by hand and overlapping windows.
And I guess the type of multitasking I do doesn't really require seeing two apps at the same time, and two CRT monitors on dorm desk are overkill...so when moving out I only took the 17' Eizo, with 1024x768, 1152x864, or even 1280x960, depending on my mood I guess

When I sometimes think about getting "modern" TFT screen, widescreen is the only option for me - there's a lot of movie watching going on, and widescreen can emulate two monitors a bit...
