  • New fileserver.....

So, I just sort of wanted a mini-itx powered NAS box or fileserver, instead of just having lots of disks in different machines, and placed on bookshelves...

    I ordered this today:

Chenbro ES34069 case (4 bays and a space for the mini-itx+2.5in HDD+Slim DVD
AMD x3 8750 95W to be underclocked and undervolted to get around 2Ghz.
    Jetway NC81-LF AMD 780G + SB700
    - ati 3200 graphics
    - full 1080p support
    - HDMI/DVI/VGA and HDCP onboard
    - Onboard 128Mb Framebuffer
    - 2xGigE (PCI and PCIe)
    -All solid capacitor design
    Slim DVDRW
    4xWD Green 1Tb 5400rpm 32Mb cache
    edit : + a 2.5in 60Gb drive for the OS.

The only thing worrying me is the x3's power output.
I don't think it would even get warm doing its normal duties, but i will have to test it just in case at full load for stability...finding a 1U cooler isn't easy...will wait and see if the 1U one I have coming is good enough...

Should be powerful enough for a while, and I can always add bigger drives later.

Seeing as all the connections are there for it, it would work as a TV PC also...no recording tho unless from a USB source...

Just added a Promise FastTrack TX4310 4xSATA RAID PCI which does raid 5 since the onboard one doesn't do raid 5 apparently.

The board doesn't react to the X3. PSU comes on (external 300W) but nothing on the mobo, no fans.
It might be too powerful for the 4 phase power delivery system, and the board will just refuse to startup.
Have ordered a X2 2.6GHz 45W to see if I can flash to the latest BIOS and try again...

Have also just realized that AM3 chips will fit and work in AM2+ motherboards, so I could have gotten one of the Phenom II X3's....which have a slightly lower power envelope, and are manufactured in 45nm instead of 65nm.
Oh well. Lets just see if the X2 works, flash the board, and try the X3 again and see what happens...

Got the RAID card this morning...
Just waiting on the lower wattage CPU....

Have also found a use for the extra fan for the VRM's on my Maximus Formula, it fits the small outlet at the top of the NAS case....i'll show it in pictures when it actually working and being put together...have also added a 60mm fan to the front of the mini-itx side of the chassis...hopefully it won't be running at 8krpm all the time, otherwise i'll have to dig out or buy a bloody fan controller....

                  Right.
Got the x2 cpu, and lets hope it isn't the memory or something.

Installed.....had some problems with the raid card not having the holes for the PCI bracket being exactly where the one from the case....so a cable tie went there...
and a piece of cardboard folded to hold the other end down.
I also need a fan-mate, the 60mm front fan is at 8krpm all the time, nowhere in the bios to change it...only the cpu fan.

i'm still missing a few chipset drivers, but i'll sort that out in a jiffy.
Looking very quick, and i can confirm it has dual PCIe GigE LAN.

Well, assuming you have a nontraffic shaped line at 10mb download (1MB download odd) downloading 24 hours a day, which I assume a file server would do, I would say in the region of just over a month.
